Seven Meet Records Set at Intrasquad Meet

Lincoln - The Nebraska track and field team wrapped up its annual Red vs. White Intrasquad meet on Friday night at the Devaney Center Indoor Track, after six events were completed on Thursday night. The White team displayed a dominating performance over the Red team with a 131-98 victory, overall both teams set a combined seven meet records.

The men's jumps highlighted the meet for the second straight year as the top long jumper broke the previous meet record of 25-5 1/4, set by Bobby Carter in 2009. 2010 Outdoor Long Jump All-American Chris Phipps, led the way with a leap of 25-6, followed by 2009 national indoor long jump champion Nicholas Gordon at 25-4 ¾ and true freshman Dexter McKenzie in third at 23-11. Phipps finished Friday setting his second meet record after going 51-10 1/2 in the triple jump breaking the 2006 record set by Daniel Roper.

True freshman from Bridegtown, Barbados, Mara Weekes was a spectacle at the track and field intraquad meet, sweeping the women's sprints and setting three meet records.  Weekes ended the Thursday session with a record-breaking time of 56.37 in the 400-meter dash. The true freshman rounded out her victory performance with her second record-setting performance in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.39, breaking the 2003 record held by former Olympian, NCAA Indoor 60-Meter Hurdles Champion and All-American Priscilla Lopes.

Junior Arna Erega, a native of Rijeka, Croatia, was among the elite to break meet records at the White vs. Red Intrasquad meet. Erega snapped the 2005, 60-Meter hurdles record set by 2004 NCAA Indoor 60-Meter Hurdles Champion Priscilla Lopes. The native from Croatia set the meet record in prelims Friday with a time of 8.34 before taking second to Karyn LaCour in the finals. 

The meet two records of the meet were both set in the 4x400 meter relays. The men broke a 2006 record the relay consisted of Jodi-Rae Blackwood, Zach Morris, Dale Ervin and Eric Lund with a time of 3:15.73.  The women snapped a 1998 record running a time of 3:49.06, the relay consisted of Mara Weekes, Rachel Butler, Lorena Menghia and Megan Wheatley.

The meet also offered the opportunity for young Husker fans to get out onto the same track that the Huskers run on, as the youngsters were able to run in both the Little Husker 60- and 200-meter dashes.

The Huskers will now continue to prepare for the start of the 2011 track and field season, as they are set to open at home on Friday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. with the two-day Holiday Inn Invitational.
