Wolkins Enters NCAA Top 10

Lawrence, Kan. ? Cool temperatures welcomed the Nebraska track and field team to Memorial Stadium on Friday for the third day of the 2010 Kansas Relays. While the Huskers competed in preliminaries on the track, NU put on strong performances across the field events.

Adam Wolkins continued to shine in his first season in a Husker uniform, as he tossed a season best of 230-10 in the men’s javelin to finish second. The mark is the fourth-best throw in school history and ranks eighth in the NCAA among marks entering the weekend.

After winning two Kansas Relays javelin titles as a prep standout at Tonganoxie High School in DeSoto, Kan., Nebraska sophomore Roxi Grizzle came close to her first collegiate title with a second-place finish. Grizzle posted the top collegiate throw in the field with a season best of 163-3, but unable to pass former Husker and NU school- record holder Kayla Wilkinson-Colgrove, who won her third career Kansas Relays javelin title with a throw of 169-3.

Amanda Latsch became the first Huskers on the women’s side since Becky Breisch in 2003 to win the shot put, as she posted a season-best throw of 48-10. NU put two more in the top five with a third-place finish by Samantha Musil (47-8) and a fourth-place toss by Veronica Grizzle (47-6 1/4). Tyler Hitcher added a fourth-place finish on the men’s side, as he tossed 54-8 3/4.

In the triple jump, Zarinah Suluki-Drakes and Chris Phipps each earned runner-up honors with season-best jumps, with Suluki-Drakes clearing 42-0 1/2 and Phipps jumping 51-5 3/4.

Seth Burney opened his 2010 outdoor season with a fifth-place showing in the men’s pole vault. Burney cleared 16-11 1/2 and then went for 17-5 1/2, but was unable to clear.

The Huskers will be back at Memorial Stadium tomorrow for the fourth and final day of the Kansas Relays. Live results and full recap will be available at Huskers.com
