Husker Records Continue to Fall

Lincoln ? Freshman Dmitrijs Milkevics dismantled the Nebraska school record, the Big 12 Conference record and the Bob Devaney Sports Center record in the 600-yard run with his time of 1:08.67 to lead the NU track and field team Saturday afternoon in the adidas Classic.

Milkevics broke Regis Humphrey’s previous school record of 1:09.17 set in 1986. The Riga, Latvia, native is also currently ranked fourth in the NCAA in the 800-meters, behind teammate Aaron Nasers, with his time of 1:48.75 set in last weekend’s Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.

Danny Hill finished behind Milkevics in second place with a time of 1:10.46.

“I thought it was a good two-day meet (including the Prairie Wolf Invitational on Friday),” head coach Gary Pepin said. “It was good to get a test of how the Big 12 meet would run. We have had some really outstanding performances. Dmitrijs’ time in the 600 yards was fantastic and there were several others.”

Sophomore Priscilla Lopes reset the NU school record in the 60-meter hurdles for the third time in four races, running a winning time of 8.13 in the finals. In back-to-back events, Lopes also won the women’s 60-meter dash with her NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 7.36. The Whitby, Ontario, native has qualified for NCAA Indoor Championships in the hurdles, the 60 meters and the 200 meters this season.

Freshman Jenny Green and sophomore transfer Jessi Graff both recorded the second-best mark in the country in the pole vault with their clearing of 13-8 ?. Green won the competition because she cleared the height on her first attempt, as opposed to Graff, who cleared it on her second try at the height. Teammates Alissa Koerner and Christi Lehman were third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 13-0 ? and 12-6 ?.

Junior Becky Breisch won the women’s shot put, improving her mark for a fifth consecutive week, launching a mark of 56-10 ? on her last attempt of the day. Breisch also won the women’s weight throw for the second day in a row, after only practicing the event for four days. Breisch’s mark of 60-3 is just short of an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark.

“It’s great that Becky has been able to do that well in the weight throw in such a short practice time,” Pepin said. “You could give her just about anything and she could throw it well, but that could really help us in the conference meet for her to compete in the weight throw as well as the shot put.”

Teammate Leann Boerema won silver in the shot put with her throw of 52-9 ?, while Jennifer Steiner took fourth place with her 46-10 ?. Tia DeSoto finished second to Breisch in the weight throw with her all-time career-best mark of 60-1.

Three-time national champion Carl Myerscough won the men’s shot put by more than a foot and a half, throwing 67-10 3/4, to improve his mark from a week ago by a half an inch.

The Huskers swept the top two spots in the women’s high jump, with Na’Tassia Vice taking the win with her 5-9 ? clearance. Sara Jane Baker was second, with a height of 5-7 ?.

Senior Ann Gaffigan won the women’s mile race, clocking a time of 4:52.15. Freshman Danute Ceika won the women’s 800 meters in 2:10.01, to set the ninth fastest time in school history. Anne Shadle was behind her in third place with her 2:11.48 clocking.

Arturs Abolins won the men’s long jump for the Huskers with his leap of 23-7 ?, followed by teammate Chris Richardson with his mark of 22-10 ?. Senior Ineta Radevica won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 42-9 ? in her only legal mark of the competition. Radevica recorded her mark on her second jump of the preliminaries and passed all three jumps in the finals. Authea Chambers finished behind her in third with a jump of 40-2 ?.

Junior Nenad Loncar ran a second-place time of 7.97 in the 60-meter hurdles, followed by Richard Davidson Jr. in third with his time of 8.02. Junior Dusty Stamer won silver in the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.71.

Sophomore Isaiah Fluellen ran the fastest time of the season for the Huskers in the 200 meters to finish second in 21.64 in his first race in two years. Teammate Oliver Williams was right behind Fluellen in third place in 21.69.

Senior Brad Teeple tied Pat Manson for the win in the men’s pole vault, as both cleared 17-0 ? on their first attempt, but missed all three tries at 17-4 ?. Freshman Gable Baldwin was third and Nic Petersen was fourth, with both clearing 16-6 ?.

After tying the school record in the 800 meters on Friday night in the 800 meters, Nasers finished third in the men’s mile with his time of 4:08.17.

Sophomore Tommy Donlin won bronze in the men’s weight throw despite fouling in his final two attempts. Donlin threw a mark of 60-5 ? on his first throw of the day to earn the third-place spot.
