Lincoln - After capturing eight wins on Friday night, the Huskers won another 14 events on Saturday during the final day of the Holiday Inn Invitational. The Huskers were led by numerous seniors as they completed the first weekend of competition.
Luke Pinkelman recorded one of the more dominant performances of the afternoon for the Huskers. The senior from Cozad, Neb., recorded a first-place throw of 63-4 in the shot put, starting his senior season in stellar fashion. Additionally, Taylor Shapland came in second in the shot put with a throw of 52-11.
Cami Jiskra recorded the first pole vault title of her senior season with a 13-3 1/2 leap to start out the Huskers on the field events. Maggie Maher came in third with a personal-best leap of 12-11 1/2, and Breanna Bussel tabbed a mark of 12-7 1/2 to finish in fourth. Nate Polacek jump-started his senior season with a first-place finish in the pole vault and a mark of 17-0 3/4.
Carlie Pinkelman claimed the first title of her Husker career in the shot put with a throw of 46-7 1/4. The Cozad, Neb., native redshirted her first year at Nebraska.
Marusa Cernjul notched a title in the high jump with a mark of 5-7 in her first competition as a Husker. Anna Weigandt took the triple jump crown with a mark of 39-5 1/4, while Jeanelle Facey finished third with a mark of 38-11. Carlos Hernandez turned in a mark of 6-10 1/4 in the high jump for second-place, and Travis Englund took third with a leap of 6-8 1/4.
Chris Phipps earned his second jumps title of the weekend with a mark of 51-9 in the triple jump. Phipps took the long jump title during the first night of Holiday Inn Invitational competition on Friday.
Husker newcomer Mila Andric made a name for herself on Saturday with a pair of titles in the 60-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash. Andric recorded a time of 8.68 in the 60-meter hurdles to take the title, while Jordan Stiens finished third with a time of 8.87 and Ellie Grooters came in fourth after recording a mark of 9.16. Andric turned in a first-place showing in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 56.55.
Miles Ukaoma and Bjorn Barrefors finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Ukaoma notched a time of 8.20, while Barrefors recorded a mark of 8.21.
Mara Weekes recorded a mark of 7.64 in the 60-meter dash to finish in third. Breunna McCarty made her Husker debut with a fifth-place finish and a time of 7.76. Chris Phipps came in second and Ricco Hall and John Welk finished third and fourth, respectively, in the men's 60-meter dash. Phipps notched a time of 6.94, while Hall and Welk both came in with a time of 6.98.
Ellie Grooters guided the Huskers to a sweep in the 600-meter run as she posted a time of 1:33.07 to finish in first-place. Brooke Dinsdale finished second after notching a mark of 1:34.19 and Blaire Dinsdale came in third with a time of 1:34.90. Tommy Brinn continued his impressive weekend with another win after posting a time of 1:19.49 in the 600-meter run.
Mara Weekes turned in a second-place showing in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.55. Two Husker men produced top-five showings in the 200-meter dash as Ricco Hall came in second (21.43) and Miles Ukaoma took fourth (22.07).
The Huskers swept the distance medley relay as the women were led by Ashley Miller, Erica Hamik, Ellen Dougherty and Jessica Furlan with a first-place time of 11:34.11. The men followed their lead with a time 10:02.46 behind the efforts of Brad Doering, Grant Duffy, Connor Gibson and Jarren Heng. The Nebraska women took the 4x400 meter relay title behind the 3:47.73 time of Mila Andric, Mara Weekes, Brooke Dinsdale and Ellie Grooters.
The Huskers return to action next weekend for the adidas Classic at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.
