No. 7 Huskers Host No. 2 Stanford

NU heads into the Stanford dual following a bye week. Two weeks ago, Nebraska fell to Iowa in Iowa City, 348.100-342.900. Freshman Wyatt Aycock posted career highs on rings (13.90), parallel bars (14.60), and high bar (13.90), while also capturing the all-around title.
    Co-captain Andreas Hofer and freshman Wyatt Aycock are expected to compete in the all-around today for the Huskers.  Hofer competed on a limited basis at Iowa because of illness.

This will be first of two meetings between Nebraska and Stanford this season. The Cardinal comes to Lincoln ranked No.2 in the country. Stanford is led by four-time All-American Tim Gentry.

All youth eighth grade and under who wear team apparel with their team name or logo will receive free admission.

Scouting No. 2 Stanford

Going into Friday’s meet at Illinois, Stanford is averaging a 355.83 team score, which puts the Cardinal No.2 in the country. Last weekend Stanford traveled to defending national champion Michigan and beat the Wolverines, 351.250-346.200

The Cardinal is led by Tim Gentry won two event titles in Ann Arbor, one on rings with a 15.50 and the other on vault with a 15.95. Gentry, a senior all-arounder, was named this week’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week.

On floor, Stanford averages 60.533, which ranks No. 2 nationally. The Cardinal floor team is led by senior Josh Dixon, who is ranked third nationally (15.833). Gentry ranks 16th in the country (14.717).

On pommel horse, the Cardinal is led by sophomores Gabriel Alvarado (No. 8, 14.833) and John Martin (No. 10, 14.667). The Stanford pommel horse team ranks No.5 in the country.

On rings, Stanford ranks No. 2 in the nation, and has four gymnasts among the top 20 individually.  The Stanford rings team is led by Gentry (3rd, 15.683), sophomore, James Fosco (7th, 15.217), senior Ryan Lieberman (12th, 14.950) and sophomore Jordan Nolff (14th, 14.867).

On vault, the Cardinal is also ranked second nationally with a team average of 63.417. The vault unit is headed by Gentry (4th, 16.167) and Alex Buscaglia (6th, 5.967).

The Cardinal parallel bars team is ranked No. 5 in the country with a 57.900 average. Stanford is led by Lieberman was is ranked No. 4 (14.933).  Gentry gives the Cardinal a pair of top-20 gymnasts on the event by coming in at No. 12 (14.500).

Going into Friday’s meet at Illinois, Stanford owned the nation’s No. 1 high bar team (58.567). Buscaglia leads the Cardinal on the event, ranking second nationally (15.217). Dixon (5th, 14.700) and Gentry (16th, 14.350) give Stanford three gymnasts in the top 20.

Huskers Capture Five Titles at Iowa

Wyatt Aycock, Andreas Hofer, Eric Schryver, Wyatt Baier and Anthony Ingrelli all claimed event titles, but No. 8 Nebraska dropped a 348.100-342.900 decision to No. 10 Iowa on Feb. 19 in Iowa City.

Aycock claimed the individual all-around title with an 82.700, as the only all-around competitor for either team on the night. Aycock produced a 15.000 on vault (6th), a 14.600 on parallel bars (2nd), 13.900 on high bar (T6th) and still rings (T7th), a 13.000 on floor exercise (11th) and a 12.300 on pommel horse (11th).

Hofer captured his event title on high bar with a 14.400, but Nebraska’s top all-arounder did not compete in the all-around because of illness. The sophomore did compete in four events on the night despite the illness, adding a fifth-place finish in rings (14.300), while also competing on bars (12.900) on horse (12.600).

Schryver got the Huskers off to a winning start by claiming his second career event title with a win on pommel horse. The freshman posted a 15.20 on the event, well ahead of Iowa’s Broderick Shemansky’s second-place effort of 14.800. Junior David Jacobs added a tie for fifth on the apparatus with a career-high 14.00, but the Huskers managed just a 54.700 on the event - their lowest event score of the night. Iowa posted a 57.400 on horse.

Nebraska posted its top team score with a 61.300 on vault led by Baier’s 15.700, which tied Iowa’s Anton Gryshayev for first on the event. C.J. Schaaf and Will Eastman tied for third on the event with scores of 15.300, while Aycock added a sixth-place finish with a 15.000. Iowa posted a 61.000 on vault.

The Huskers also outpaced the Hawkeyes on high bar with a team total of 56.500, while Iowa managed a 56.000. Hofer captured the event crown with a 14.400 on bar. Schryver tied for third with a 14.200, while Jacobs added a fifth-place finish with a 14.100. Aycock (13.900) and Mark Ringle (13.800) also produced solid scores for the Huskers.

Ingrelli rounded out the Husker titles by matching Iowa’s Gryshayev for a still rings win with a 15.200. Hofer added a fifth-place finish with 14.300 for the Huskers, as NU finished with a 57.000 on the event, while Iowa notched a 58.100.

Eastman added a second-place finish on floor exercise with a 14.50, while Ringle contributed a third-place showing with a 14.40. NU managed just a 56.100 on the event, while Iowa posted a 57.900 capped by Matt McGrath’s event title (15.500).

Aycock led the Huskers by tying for second with a 14.600 on parallel bars, as NU notched a 57.300 on the event. Ringle added a fourth-place showing on the apparatus with 14.500. Iowa posted a 57.700 on the event led by Shemansky’s event title with a 14.700.

A Look Ahead

After traveling to Ohio State next Saturday, the Huskers return home for their final home meet of the season when they take on Iowa and Minnesota at the Devaney Center. NU will celebrate Senior Night, and the competition begins at 7 p.m.
