Eugene, Ore - Heptathlete Chantae McMillan collected the third All-America honor of her career and javelin thrower Adam Wolkins claimed his first top-eight finish at the Division I level Thursday at the 2010 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Eleven Huskers competed in six events on the second day of the national meet.
McMillan saved her best performances for the last two days of the season, as she began Thursday in sixth place and passed two opponents in the final three events. The Rolla, Mo., native climbed all the way to third after taking fourth in the javelin (137-7) and tying for sixth in the long jump (18-9). She then shattered her career-best time in the 800-meter run (2:23.65) by five seconds to finish fourth overall and secure All-America status.
McMillan and Wolkins run Nebraska's 2010 outdoor All-American total to four through two days of the NCAA Championships, joining Epley Bullock (high jump) and Tyler Hitchler (discus).
Despite rainy conditions in the late afternoon hours, Wolkins delivered a big performance at his first career NCAA Championship meet by finishing seventh in the javelin. The junior from Canada recorded his best mark on his second-to-last attempt with a throw of 228-5 after snagging the last spot in the finals with the ninth-best throw through two flights. Wolkins came to Nebraska after winning two NJCAA javelin national championships at Cowley (Kan.) Community College.
Junior Lehann Fourie will join the Husker All-Americans following his finals qualification in the 100-meter hurdles. Fourie won the third heat in 13.52 to clock the third-fastest time overall and claim a spot in the finals on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. CST. The Pretoria, South Africa native was a 2010 All-American in the indoor season (60-meter hurdles) and will add an outdoor honor virtue of his top-eight finish. Senior Tyrell Ross also ran in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing 22nd in 14.13.
Senior Megan Wheatley nearly gained All-America honors in the heptathlon as well, but came up two places short by finishing 10th with 5,420 points, just 10 points behind eighth place. Wheatley finished in the top 10 of all three events Thursday, ending with a seventh-place showing in the 800-meter run (season-best 2:17.52). She also took fourth in the long jump (18-3 ¾) and ninth in the javelin (118-11).
A 2010 indoor All-American, senior Leandra McGruder was unable to reach the top eight outdoors as she finished 18th in the triple jump with a leap of 41-4 ¼.
In her first career NCAA Championship appearance, sophomore Jade Hodson finished 20th in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-1. She scratched on her first two attempts but had an eligible throw on her last attempt.
Nebraska's 4x400-meter relay team of Adam Dailey, Cylend Simmons, Dax Danns and Lukas Hulett did not reach the finals as they finished 24th overall in 3:13.49.
