Huskers Complete Sweep with 2-1 Victory

Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team was able to make a pair of first-inning runs hold up, as the Huskers held on for a 2-1 victory to complete a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota State on Monday at Bowlin Stadium.

After taking game one, 4-1, the Huskers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman Whitney Barrett coaxed a leadoff and a one-out double from sophomore Crystal Carwile put runners at first and second with only one out. A misplayed grounder by second baseman Teresa Howell with two outs allowed both Barrett and Carwile to score.

Steph Kuhl drew the Jackrabbits to within 2-1 with a solo home run over the 220-foot sign in center to lead off the top of the third inning.

SDSU had only three baserunners over the next four innings before making things interesting in the ninth. A one-out single put the tying run on base, before a caught stealing put the Huskers one out away from victory. Another single again put the tying run back on base before Brooke Postma grounded back to NU starter Molly Hill, who threw to first to wrap up the victory.

Hill improved to 13-7 with the win, allowing just one run on five hits. She added nine strikeouts against just one walk while surrendering one earned run or less for the 15th time in her last 17 starts.

Barrett led the Husker offense with a 1-for-2 day that included a run scored and a career-high two walks. Sophomore Meghan Mullin went 2-for-3 to record her team-leading 13th multi-hit game.
