Long’s Career Capsule
After spending her freshman season at Blinn College in Texas, Haley Long developed into an all-conference player at Nebraska. Long earned second-team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore while earning the distinction as a three-year starter in the outfield. She finished with a .269 career average, producing 108 hits. Long scored 51 runs in her career while adding 17 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 43 RBIs. Long also added 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts, while committing only three errors in 140 career chances defensively.
Senior Season [2008]
Long battled through injuries in her senior season, starting 49 games and posting a .228 average. Long homered a career-high two times as a senior, after homering only once in her first two seasons with Nebraska. She also scored a career-best 18 runs, while posting a .313 on-base percentage. On the basepaths, Long was successful on 7-of-8 stolen-base attempts. Defensively, Long committed only one error in 48 chances for a .979 fielding percentage, while she threw two runners out from the outfield, including one at first base.
Junior Season [2008]
Long moved into a full-time starting role as a junior, starting every game but one ... showed improved power from her sophomore season, leading the team with 10 doubles and two triples while hitting her first career home run at any level ... also tallied a career-best 22 RBIs to rank second on the team ... finished with 10 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI contests ... hit .283 in league play, including .333 with runners in scoring position ... led NU with a .365 on-base percentage in Big 12 play ... was one of NU’s top clutch hitters, batting .308 with runners in scoring position and tying for the team lead with 14 two-out RBIs ... led NU by driving in six runs in 11 games against ranked opponents ... also hit .444 with the bases loaded ... earned a selection to the NFCA Leadoff Classic all-tournament team after hitting .385 with four RBIs in five games at the prestigious event ... had a career game at UNLV, finishing 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, setting new career bests with three hits and four RBIs, while tying her career high with two runs scored ... earned a spot on the all-tournament team after a solid performance at the Big 12 Championship ... finished 4-for-13 at the tournament with four RBIs while extending her hitting streak to a career-high-tying seven games ... highlighted a strong month of May where she hit .375 with four RBIs in five games ... batted .362 in 21 March games while adding six doubles and a .534 slugging percentage ... hit .321 at home with eight doubles and eight runs scored.
Sophomore Season [2007]
A late find for NU, Long joined the Huskers as a transfer during the summer months and was brought in for immediate help in an inexperienced outfield ... showed she could contribute immediately at the season-opening Paradise Classic ... hit safely in all six games at the tournament, including a hit in her first career at bat at Hawaii on Feb. 8 ... finished her first weekend at the Division I level with a .467 average (7-for-15) with four runs scored and four RBIs ... hit safely in her first seven career games and 10 of her first 11 ... finished the season with nine multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games ... earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after leading the Husker regulars with a .271 average during conference play ... defensively, was perfect in 34 outfield chances, playing left, center and right.
Freshman Season at Blinn College [2006]
In her lone season at Blinn, Long hit .355 with 43 runs scored, five doubles, 33 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and a team-best 10 triples ... hit safely in career-high 11 straight games ... recorded 16 multi-hit games, including a three-game stretch in late March where she went 7-for-13 after a pair of two-hit contests and one three-hit game ... had two games where she tripled twice ... produced seven multi-RBI games, including a season-best four against Meridian Community College on Feb. 24 ... drew 12 walks while striking out just eight times ... went 45 at bats before her first strikeout ... scored at least one run in nine straight games from March 17 to April 1 ... during conference play hit .345 (30-for-87) ... in 28 league games, also drove in 18 runs while scoring 22 times ... was perfect in the field in 57 chances.
Before Nebraska
Long played her high school ball for Brenham High School in Brenham, Texas ... earned first-team all-state honors ... helped Brenham to a state title in 2005 by hitting over .300 with a team-high eight triples ... was joined on the state championship team by former Oklahoma Sooner and 2007 co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Lauren Eckermann ... went 4-for-5 with a pair of two-run triples and six RBIs in the state quarterfinals ... also earned two letters in volleyball, while claiming academic all-state accolades ... chose Nebraska over a second year at Blinn College, and over Big 12 foes Missouri and Kansas.
Personal
The daughter of Jim and Daphne Long, Haley Ann Long was born on March 23, 1987, in Houston, Texas. Haley has four siblings, Jamie (32), Chelsea (23), Grant (29) and her twin sister Holly (21). Haley is majoring in sociology and is Nebraska’s first letterwinner from the state of Texas since Ginger Taylor in 2000.
