Huskers Hit Road for Three-Dual Weekend

After a second-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the No. 3 Nebraska wrestling team hits the road for a challenging three-dual road trip in the Northwest.  The weekend starts with a dual against Oregon State in Corvallis on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The Beavers had two place-winners at the Las Vegas Invitational, led by heavyweight Ty Watterson, who finished sixth.

 

From Corvallis, Nebraska goes back on the road for a dual in Eugene against Oregon Saturday evening at 9 p.m.  After that, Nebraska takes on Boise State in Boise on Sunday at 3 p.m.  Boise State had three wrestlers finish in fourth place in their respective weight classes at the Las Vegas Invitational. 

 

Nebraska Takes Second in Vegas

Behind the 184-pound championship of Travis Pascoe, the No. 3 Nebraska wrestling team finished second at the 23rd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday. The Huskers were defeated by Michigan, 148-139.5. Nebraska had eight of 10 wrestlers place among the top eight of their respective weight classes.

 

Pascoe won his second straight individual championship at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 6-4 decision of Arizona State’s Clarence Dollaway, capping a weekend in which Pascoe was 5-0.One of five Huskers to enter Saturday’s action in the semifinals, Pascoe was the only one to advance to the finals. Three other NU wrestlers took third place. One of those was Jacob Klein, who defeated Missouri’s Tyron Woodley in the third-place match in double overtime, 4-3. Klein was 6-1 on the weekend, with four of those victories going for bonus points.

 

At 141 pounds, Matt Murray was awarded third after an injury default disqualified Brandon Lauer of West Virginia. Murray finished the tournament 6-1, losing only in the semifinals to Robert Tarquino of Pittsburgh, 3-2.

 

Marc Harwood also earned third-place status at 174 pounds, beating Eric Hood of Edinboro in overtime, 3-1. Harwood, who lost in the quarterfinals, won three wrestleback matches to get into the third-place match.

 

Matt Keller finished fifth for Nebraska at 125 pounds, defeating Jesse Miramontes of Cal State-Fullerton for the second time in the invitational in the fifth-place match, 6-3. Keller was 5-2 at Las Vegas.

 

At 157 pounds, B.J. Wright finished sixth after a 3-3 weekend. B.J. Padden took seventh for NU at 197 pounds, and Mitch Manstedt finished eighth for the Huskers at heavyweight.

 

ScoutingOregonState

Oregon State will wrestle its first duals of the 2004-05 season this weekend.  They wrestle Oregon in Corvallis Friday before taking on Nebraska Saturday.  Last weekend, the Beavers finished 22nd at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

 

Oregon State is led by No. 15 heavyweight, sophomore Ty Watterson.  Watterson enters this weekend 6-0 with a pin on the season.  He finished sixth at the Las Vegas Invitational, stopping due to soreness in his knee.  Watterson leads a trio of ranked Beaver wrestlers.  Also in this week’s rankings are Matt Ellis, 13th in the nation at 165 pounds and a transfer from Oklahoma State, and Dan Pitsch, the No. 20 184-pound wrestler in the nation.

     

Scouting Oregon

The No. 18 Oregon wrestling team enters this weekend 0-2 in duals.  They open their season with a 30-16 at Wyoming on Nov. 12 and last weekend fell at home to UC-Davis, 26-22.  The Ducks have also competed in a pair of invitationals in which no team scoring was kept. 

 

Five Oregon wrestlers are ranked this week.  Leading that list are a pair of grapplers in the nation’s top five.  Shane Webster is the third-ranked 174 pound wrestler.  Webster is a perfect 9-0 this season, including three wins by technical fall and four by major decision.  At 197 pounds, Scott Barker is No. 5 with a 9-1 mark including seven pins this season.

 

ScoutingBoiseState

Boise State is coming off an eighth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.  The Broncos had four wrestlers place.  Freshman Andrew Hochstrasser led the way for the Broncos with a third-place finish at 125 pounds.  At 149 pounds, Ben Cherrington earned a fourth place finish.  Scott Jorgensen took eighth for BSU at 133 pounds, while Eric Smith was the fourth-place heavyweight.

 

Cherrington is the highest-ranked Boise State wrestler, holding the No. 8 spot after his fourth-place finish in Vegas.  Hochstrasser is the next highest-ranked Bronco in this week’s polls, sitting at No. 9 after his third-place finish in Las Vegas.  Jorgensen is 14th at 133 pounds.  Smith is 11th at heavyweight, while K.C. Walsh is the 19th-ranked 197 pound wrestler.

 

The Last Time We Met: Nov. 15, 2003: Nebraska 33, OregonState 9

The Huskers beat Oregon State 33-9 in the second dual of the 2003-04 season.  Five Nebraska wrestlers earned bonus-point wins against the Beavers, led by a pair of pins.  Jason Powell pinned OSU’s Eric Stevenson 2:39 into their match at 125 pounds, while B.J. Padden pinned Jed Lowe with 39 seconds left in their 197-pound match.  NU also collected major-decision victories from B.J. Wright, Travis Pascoe and Matt Murray.

 

The Last Time We Met: Jan. 3, 2004: Nebraska 44, Oregon 0

The Nebraska wrestling team rebounded from its first loss of the season to post its third shutout of the year over Oregon, 44-0.  Of NU’s ten wins, six earned the Huskers bonus points, led by the return of top-ranked and undefeated Jason Powell at 125 pounds. Powell scored his 11th victory of the season and 15th in row over Jacob Boyles via technical fall, 21-5.  In the only match featuring two ranked wrestlers, redshirt freshman and 18th-ranked Matt Keller added to his team lead in wins with No. 17, defeating 16th-ranked Jason Harless, 9-3, at 133 pounds.

 

The Last Time We Met: Nov. 21, 2004: Nebraska 31, BoiseState 10

The Huskers earned their first of seven victories over ranked opponents last season by defeating 22nd-ranked Boise State, 31-10. Against the Broncos, the Huskers were led by strong performances by junior Travis Pascoe, Shufelt and Padden, who all recorded falls. Shufelt pinned Nick Budeski, 4:48 into their match, while Pascoe pinned Casey Phelps 57 seconds into the second period. Padden provided the final pin of the dual over 16th-ranked K.C. Walsh, 2:27 into their match.

 

Shufelt Likely Done for 2004-05 Season

After suffering a serious injury to his right elbow 32 seconds into his match with West Virginia’s Mike Torriero Nov. 27 at the NU Coliseum, 149-pound senior wrestler Travis Shufelt is likely out for the rest of the 2004-05 season.  Shufelt will undergo surgery to repair the elbow later this month.  Because the injury occured in only the second dual of the 2004-05 season, Shufelt may apply for a medical redshirt year, allowing him to come back for the 2005-06 campaign.

 

Non-Varsity Notes

The Huskers’ non-varsity wrestlers are also in action this weekend at the UNK Open in Kearney, Neb., on Saturday, Dec. 11.  That will be the fourth of seven non-varsity competitions for NU’s wrestlers.  After Christmas break, Nebraska’s non-varsity will go to Blair, Neb. for the Dana College Open on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005.  The following Saturday, the non-varsity will compete in the Glen Brand Open at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.  Nebraska’s non-varsity schedule will conclude with the Great Plains Open in Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 29.

 

Last weekend at the UNI Open in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jon May finished 2nd in the heavyweight division to lead the Huskers.  He was NU’s only placewinner.

 

At the Harold Nichols Open at Fort Dodge, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 13, Paul Donahoe and Chad Sportelli shared the championship at 125 pounds.  David Ingalls was defeated in the finals at 157 pounds by Iowa State’s Trent Paulson, 3-1 in overtime, to earn second.  At heavyweight, Jon May finished fourth after losing the third-place match to Blake Gillis of Wartburg, 7-1.

 

The non-varsity competed along with the varsity at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. on Nov. 20.  In the open division, Jon May took fourth at heavyweight.  Chad Sportelli finished sixth at 125 after losing 5-0 to Derrick Fleenor of Oklahoma State.  In the 20-and-under division, Paul Donahoe took the 125-pound championship, defeating Hofstra’s Dave Tomasette 4-3 in the final.  Joe Morrison earned runner-up at 133 pounds, while Chris Oliver took third at 157 pounds with a 13-2 major decision over Ben Henderson of Dana College.  A pair of Huskers placed at 174 pounds, with Matt Farrell earning third and Cody Foust taking sixth.

 

Nebraska Signs Five in Class of 2005

Nebraska recently signed five wrestlers during the fall signing period, all of whom are expected to make an impact.

 

In the first day of signing, the Husker coaching staff inked three.

 

The in-state member of that trio is Aurora native Levi Wofford.  Projected to wrestle either in the 184-pound or 197-pound weight class, Wofford has won two class B state championships under his father, Bill, who is Aurora’s head coach.

 

Also signing in the first day was Vince Jones, the fifth-ranked high school wrestler in the nation at 189 pounds according to Wrestling International Newsmagazine.  A native of Sickerville, N.J., Jones has won two state championships for Winslow Township High School.  At the 2004 Junior National Tournament, Jones finished fourth.  He is projected to wrestle at 184 pounds in college.

 

The third high school wrestler to sign with NU is Mike Rowe from DeMatha, Md.  Wrestling at the alma mater of former Husker and All-American Todd Beckerman, Rowe has won three state championships for DeMatha High School.  Rowe, the second-best high school wrestler in the nation in his weight class according to WIN, won the Cadet National Championship and is a two-time placewinner at Junior Nationals.  He is likely to wrestle at either 133 or 141 pounds.

 

The Huskers went to Chicago for their fourth signing--Kenny Jordan from Mount Carmel High School.  Jordan, the seventh-ranked prospect in his weight class, will wrestle at 141 pounds for Nebraska.  Rounding out the recruiting class was Brady LaMar from Silver Lake, Kan.  A three-time state placewinner, LaMar will wrestle at 149 pounds at NU.   

 

Huskers, Cowboys Set for National Television Appearance

College Sports Television announced that it will broadcast Nebraska’s Feb. 10 home dual against defending national champion Oklahoma State on CSTV live starting at 7 p.m. from the NU Coliseum.  It will be simulcast locally on NETV.  One of twelve national wrestling broadcasts by CSTV, the Feb. 10 broadcast will be the only one that features a pair of Big 12 Conference teams.  Missouri’s away dual against Lehigh on Jan. 11 is the only other national broadcast featuring a Big 12 team.
