NCAA Championships
2007-Oliver went 1-2 in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships. In the first round, Oliver defeated Ohio’s Jacob Frerichs, 8-3. Back-to-back losses to Josh Zupancic of Stanford and Michael Chandler of Missouri ended Oliver’s sophomore season.
Big 12 Championships
2008-Oliver went 1-2 to place fourth at the 2008 Big 12 Championships. No. 20 Newly McSpadden of Oklahoma State pinned Oliver in the pigtail round, but the Husker rebounded with a 7-6 decision over No. 17 Chad Terry of Oklahoma. In the consolation final, McSpadden earned a 7-1 decision over Oliver.
2007-Oliver clinched his first career bid to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. Oliver sealed his trip to nationals with a 3-2 semifinal win over 15th-ranked Michael Chandler of Missouri. In the finals, No. 2 Trent Paulson of Iowa State defeated Oliver, 11-1.
2006-Oliver finished 0-3 in his first Big 12 Championships at 157 pounds. No. 15 Kevin Ward of Oklahoma State defeated Oliver, 3-1, in the first-round match. After a narrow 6-5 loss to Will Rowe of Oklahoma, Oliver lost by fall to Michael Chandler of Missouri.
Career Notes
2008-Oliver went 16-11, including 6-8 in duals, at 157 pounds during the 2007-08 season. Oliver opened the season with eight-straight wins, including six bonus-point wins to claim a dual victory and first place at the Cowboy Open on Nov. 10. Oliver suffered his first loss of the season at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 17, but rebounded to place third in the elite division.
A minor injury forced Oliver to default of the Las Vegas Invitational on Nov. 30, but Oliver earned two dual wins to start the New Year. Oliver went 1-3 at National Duals, and ended the regular season on a 1-5 slide.
2007-Oliver started the season by winning 11 of his first 12 matches and closed it by winning his last six regular-season matches (three against ranked foes) on his way to a 20-9 record and a 9-5 dual mark.
Oliver opened the season by winning the Cowboy Open on Nov. 11. He followed that with a third-place showing at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 18. Oliver earned back-to-back wins over Derek Gallagher of Virginia Tech and Mike McGill of Maryland, before injuries sidelined him for the month of December.
After losing in four of his first five matches in his return from injury, Oliver got back on the winning track with a 4-3 win over No. 14 Michael Chandler of Missouri on Jan. 28. Oliver won his last six regular-season matches of the year after an overtime loss to Newly McSpadden of Oklahoma State.
The winning streak started with back-to-back wins over ranked opponents. Oliver defeated Will Rowe of Oklahoma, 6-2, before upsetting second-ranked C.P. Schlatter of Minnesota in overtime, 7-4, two days later. Oliver closed the regular season with three straight wins, including a pin of 20th-ranked Ryan Hluschak of Drexel.
2006-Oliver won eight of his first nine matches en route to 16 regular-season wins and an 11-5 dual record.
In his first dual match, Oliver made a rousing debut with a pin of Johnny Nunez of Boise State with 21 seconds to go in the second period of their match. Oliver finished third at the UNI Open on Dec. 4 with a 5-1 record, then defeated Rob Sulaver of Michigan, 9-2, in the Huskers’ 18-16 win over the third-ranked Wolverines on Dec. 9.
Oliver bounced back from a loss at Minnesota to win his next three matches, including wins by fall and major decision. At the National Duals, Oliver bounced back from a loss to third-ranked Joe Johnston of Iowa to pin fifth-ranked Steve Luke of Michigan. The victory keyed the Huskers’ 24-16 quarterfinal win over Michigan as part of a 2-2 performance for Oliver in Cedar Falls.
Oliver built on his win over Luke with a pin of American’s Rudy Rueda on Jan. 21. En route to a 2-2 Big 12 record, Oliver defeated 15th-ranked Kevin Ward of Oklahoma State, 2-1, and second-ranked Trent Paulson of Iowa State.
2005-Oliver began his college career with a solid 19-5 campaign in which he placed in four open tournaments, including his first at Nebraska, the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 20 in his hometown of Omaha, Neb. Competing in the 20-and-under division at 157 pounds, Oliver finished third after winning his first four collegiate matches, including two wins by fall and one by major decision. After a 3-2 day at the UNI Open, Oliver rebounded to win all four of his matches, including three by fall at the Beamon Open Jan. 8 in Blair, Neb., to earn his first individual championship.
Before Nebraska-Oliver won all 130 of his high school matches during a four-year career at Omaha Creighton Prep. He won four state championships for the Junior Jays. Under the direction of coaches John Hiffernan and Ray Oliver, Chris Oliver wrestled in the 103, 119, 140, and 152-pound weight classes during his four years at Creighton Prep.
Personal-The son of Ray and Sybil Oliver, Chris was born in Lincoln, Neb., on Feb. 4, 1986. Chris has one brother, Ray Jr., and one sister, Chelsea. Oliver is a communications major. Ray Sr. was a three-year letterwinner for the NU wrestling team from 1981-83.
