Jon May Season 2007-08

NCAA Championships
2008-May went 1-2 at the 2009 NCAA Championships. No. 3 Ed Prendergast of Navy pinned May, but the Husker rebounded with a 12-2 major decision over Old Dominion's Andrew Totusek. Ninth-ranked Jermail Porter of Kent State eliminated May with a 7-2 decision.

2006-May finished 1-2 in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships at heavyweight. In the opening round, May lost to Indiana’s Dave Herman, 4-1. May earned his first career win at nationals with a pin of Matt Burkholder of Slippery Rock with 1:38 to go in their consolation bracket match. No. 16 Ty Watterson of Oregon State eliminated May with a 7-0 decision.

Big 12 Championships
2008-May posted a 1-2 mark to finish fourth at the 2008 Big 12 Championships. May lost by fall to second-seeded Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State, but rebounded with a 5-2 decision over Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez. In the consolation final, May lost a 3-1 decision to Missouri's Mark Ellis in overtime.

2006-May qualified for the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish at heavyweight in the Big 12 Championships. After a first-round overtime loss to Jake Hager, May pinned Sean Connole of Missouri with 34 seconds left in the first period to clinch a spot in the third-place match. May then defeated Richard Schopf of Iowa State, 5-2, to earn his first career trip to nationals.

2005-In his first trip to the Big 12 Championships, May finished fourth with a record of 0-2. May lost to eventual national champion Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State in the first round by major decision, 9-0. In the consolation bracket, May fell to Jake Hager of Oklahoma, 6-1.

Career Notes
2008-May finished the 2007-08 season with a 20-13 record, including 12-5 in duals. He earned two pins and two major decisions. May opened the year with two dual wins, before finishing fifth in the elite division of the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 17. May notched the same 3-2 record at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1.

May opened the dual season with five straight victories, before going 1-3 at National Duals. May lost a close 5-3 decisioin to Oklahoma State's Jared Rosholt before closing the regular season with a 4-1 record over his final five matches. May knocked off No. 11 Mark Ellis of Missouri before losing 3-1 to Iowa State's David Zabriskie to end the regular season.

2007-Before a knee injury cut his junior season short, May earned a 14-4 record including a 2-0 dual mark. May was ranked ninth in the nation at the time of his injury.

May began the season with a second-place finish at the Cowboy Open on Nov. 11. After winning by fall and major decision in the first two rounds, May defeated Reece Hopkin of Northern Colorado, 1-0, to earn a finals bid. In the finals, May fell to Division II national champion Tervel Dlagnev. On Nov. 18, May finished third in the elite bracket at the Kaufman-Brand Open. May lost in overtime to sixth-ranked Matt Fields of Iowa, then won back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket, including a 7-4 victory over Oklahoma State’s Jared Rosholt, to take third.

In his first dual match of the season, May pinned Jim Powers of Virginia Tech with 35 seconds remaining in the second period. May also shut out Jim Adair of Maryland, 4-0, for his second straight dual win.

Ranked ninth entering the Las Vegas Invitational, May earned a fourth-place finish with a 5-2 record in the tournament. May’s only losses came to a pair of wrestlers in the top six, second-ranked Bode Ogunwole of Harvard and sixth-ranked Ty Watterson of Oregon State. May sustained an injury the following week of practice, and a promising season came to an end.

2006-May finished his first full season as NU’s starter at heavyweight with a 7-10 dual mark.

After a 3-1 overtime win over Boise State’s Andy Patrick on Nov. 18, May went 3-2 at the Kaufman-Brand Open. May pinned Jason Still of Wyoming on Nov. 26 in his next varsity match. From there, May took third at the UNI Open on Dec. 4 with a 5-1 performance. After jumping into the rankings, May lost to third-ranked Greg Wagner of Michigan and second-ranked Cole Konrad of Minnesota before defeating 18th-ranked Ty Watterson of Oregon State, 3-2, on Dec. 17. May closed a 2-0 performance at the National Duals with a pin of Arturo Basulto of Cal Poly.

May defeated Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg, 6-4, before starting an eight-match string against ranked opposition. May was 1-6 during the stretch, but three of those matches were determined by two points or less. May’s lone win during that stretch was a pin of 15th-ranked Adam LoPiccolo of American on Jan. 21. May finished the regular season with a 4-0 win over Richard Schopf of Iowa State.

2005-May split time with Mitch Manstedt as the varsity starter at heavyweight. May earned a 22-10 record, with a 7-4 mark in duals. In open competition, May earned three top-five finishes, highlighted by his 4-0 performance at the Great Plains Open on Jan. 29 in Lincoln. May also took third at heavyweight with a 3-2 performance on Nov. 20 at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha. He started the season with a fourth-place showing at the Harold Nichols Open on Nov. 13 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

May’s time on varsity included a 5-1 win over nationally ranked Pat DeGain of Indiana in the finals of the 2005 Virginia Duals on Jan. 15.

2004-May earned 2004 NU Redshirt of the Year with a 17-4 record in open competition. He won championships at the UNO, UNK, and Great Plains Opens, and finished second in the Brand Open. He won eight matches by fall, and won nine of his last 10 matches.

Before Nebraska-May was a four-time all-conference selection for Coach Todd Card at Hutchinson High School. May was a state champion his senior season while owning a career record of 159-21. May was a five-time letterwinnner in wrestling, while also earning three letters in football as a teammate of current NU football players Lydon Murtha and Nate Swift. May also was a three-time junior All-American.

Personal-The son of Pat and Joy May, Jon was born Jan. 3, 1985. Jon has one sister, Katie and one brother, Michael. He is majoring in history at Nebraska.
