Wichita, Kan. ? The Nebraska women’s team grabbed the team title, while the men finished second Saturday in the K.T. Woodman Classic on a rainy afternoon in Wichita, Kan.
The Nebraska women won the meet with 217 points, followed by Wichita State (202.5) and Air Force (114.50), while the men finished second behind Penn State, 206.5-148, and ahead of Air Force in third (129).
Becky Breisch continued her winning streak, taking discus and shot put titles for the fifth consecutive week. Breisch has not lost a competition during the 2004 outdoor season. She won the shot put in Wichita with a throw of 56-1 ?, and the discus with a toss of 186-5.
Leann Boerema and Jennifer Steiner completed the first through third-place NU sweep of the women’s shot put. Boerema took second with a throw of 51-8 ?, and Steiner was third with a mark of 44-3 ? in the shot put. Steiner also took second to Breisch in the discus with a throw of 159-10.
Ann Gaffigan set a new meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 10:59.20 for the gold to open the meet on the track. Anne Shadle won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:33.04. Kim Pancoast finished behind her in second place with a time of 4:37.19.
Aaron Nasers won the men’s 1,500-meter run in 3:56.00. Dana Carne was third in 3:57.65, whie Eric Dall was fifth in 4:00.93.
Issar Yazhbin grabbed the K.T. Woodman title in the hammer throw, with a mark of 183-1 to score 10 points for the team standings. Tommy Donlin finished fifth with a mark of 172-0. Tia DeSoto won the women’s hammer throw with a season-best toss of 183-1 for a new Cessna Stadium record.
Nenad Loncar won the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.84 with an illegal wind reading of 4.4. Richard Davidson Jr. ran to a fifth-place finish in 14.31.
Sophomore Aaron Plas won the men’s high jump, clearing 6-9 ?, for his second title in the last three weeks. Teammate Yoav Shuster also cleared 6-9 ?, but took bronze on misses.Travis Baker was ninth with a jump of 6-2.
Maggi Escudero won the women’s 400-meter dash in 57.77 and Tolu Olade was fourth in 58.81. Olade was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.72 and Escudero was fourth in 25.76.
Kayte Tranel won gold in the women’s 5,000-meter run, with a time of 17:54.58.
The Huskers went 1-2-4-5 in the men’s 400 meters, led by Danny Hill’s time of 48.92. Mark Harrison took second in 49.44, while Andy Nelson was fourth (49.85) and Marcus Sedberry was fifth (50.17). Hill also won the men’s 400-meter hurdles, setting his first NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 52.16. Justine Roach won the women’s 400 hurdles in 1:04.48.
Danute Ceika claimed the title in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:13.96. Shadle took second in 2:15.24, while Kathryn Handrup was third in 2:17.17.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay team took the title, finishing in 47.71, while the men’s A team took second place in 41.71.
In the women’s pole vault, Jessie Graff led the Huskers with a second-place finish, clearing 13-0 and was first among collegians. Christi Lehman was fourth with a mark of 12-0. Brad Teeple won silver in the men’s pole vault, clearing 16-6.
Kayla Wilkinson won bronze in the women’s javelin throw, with a toss of 137-0 on her first attempt of the finals. Authea Chambers took a third-place finish in the triple jump, leaping 38-5 with a 4.0 wind reading. Ashlee Dickinson won bronze in the women’s high jump, leaping 5-2 ?.
Nate Probasco ran to a fourth-place finish in the men’s 200 meters, recording a time of 21.81. Sara Jane Baker finished in fifth-place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.94.
The Huskers will play host to their only home meet of the outdoor season Saturday, April 17, at the Ed Weir Track Stadium. The Nebraska Quadrangular is slated to begin with field events at 2:30 p.m. and running events at 4 p.m.
