Huskers Roll in Second Half to Beat Bobcats

Lincoln - Jamal Rule rushed for over 100 yards in the second half alone to spark Nebraska's 35-point outburst after halftime in the Big Red's 49-21 win over Ohio Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Rule, who finished with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, rolled for 106 yards on just eight carries in the second half capped by his 11-yard touchdown run to give Nebraska a 42-21 lead with 5:57 left. He opened the same drive with a 39-yard burst, as the Huskers amassed 183 yards on the ground after halftime against the Bobcats.

Rule added a pair of receptions, including a 24-yard second-quarter touchdown catch and run in a spectacular Nebraska debut. The freshman from Salisbury, N.C., finished with 169 all-purpose yards on just 17 touches.

Quarterback Anthony Colandrea also played well in his Husker debut. The senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., completed 18-of-32 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns. He added 10 carries for 23 yards and another score on the ground to account for 298 yards of total offense and four scores in the opener. 

Colandrea led a Nebraska offense that did not commit a turnover and produced touchdowns on each of its final five drives on the way to 523 total yards (275 pass, 248 rush).

Colandrea and Rule thrilled the NCAA-record 411th consecutive sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium on a scorching hot day to record the 100th season-opening win in Husker history. While the duo put up big numbers, plenty of other Huskers contributed strong efforts on both sides of the ball.

Junior running back Mekhi Nelson rushed 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 65 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown catch and run. Nelson finished with 129 all-purpose yards and two scores in the best performance of his Husker career.

Jacory Barney Jr. continued his outstanding play from a year ago with five receptions for 60 yards, while adding an eight-yard run and error-free play in Nebraska's punt return game.

Kwazi Gilmer pitched in five catches of his own for 58 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown grab on Nebraska's final offensive play.

Rex Guthrie helped the Husker defense end the Bobcat hopes of a late comeback with his fourth-quarter interception that set up Nebraska's final score. He added five tackles on the day.

Fellow defensive back Jamir Conn led the defense with eighth tackles while adding a pass breakup - one of eight breakups on the day for the Huskers, including two for Donovan Jones and two more for Victor Evans III.

Nebraska dominated the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 35-7 with 300 yards of total offense compared to just 115 for Ohio. The second-half performance followed an entertaining first half that sent Nebraska to the locker room with a 14-13 halfime lead after a pair of Rule touchdowns.

After Ohio took a quick 7-0 lead in the opening minutes, Colandrea and the Huskers answered with a 12-play, 75-yard march that culminated with Rule's one-yard touchdown plunge to tie the score.

The Bobcats then put together a pair of drives that resulted in 40-plus yard field goals by Will Hryszko to take a 13-7 lead with 10:38 left in the half.

Colandrea and the Big Red marched again, this time rolling 92 yards on seven plays, including a short pass that Rule turned into a 24-yard touchdown reception to give Nebraska its first lead at 14-13 with 8:13 remaining in the half.

Both teams threatened late in the half, but neither came away with points.

Colandrea completed 10-of-19 passes for 158 yards and a score in the half, while adding five carries for five yards on the ground.

In the half, Nebraska's offense totaled 223 yards, including 65 on the ground. The Bobcats nearly matched the Huskers with 188 yards, as Ohio quarterback Nick Poulos completed 10-of-19 passes for 124 yards and a score. He also led the Bobcat backs with 38 rushing yards on six carries, as Ohio totaled 64 yards on 16 carries in the half.

The second half started on shaky ground for the Husker offense, as the first two plays resulted in 21 yards lost before a three-and-out put the Bobcats at midfield to open their second half offensively with a chance to regain the lead.

But the Blackshirts held, and Colandrea engineered an impressive 11-play, 73-yard drive capped by his 13-yard touchdown run to put the Huskers up 21-13.

After another defensive stop, the Huskers marched 69 yards on eight plays capped by Nelson's 29-yard touchdown run to put Nebraska up 28-13 heading to the fourth quarter.

Ohio showed its fight with a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive capped by a Poulos one-yard touchdown. Poulos added a two-point conversion pass to pull the Bobcats within 28-21 just three minutes into the fourth quarter.

But the final 12 minutes was all Big Red, as Nelson took a short pass from Colandrea and exploded 51 yards through the middle of the defense for a touchdown to put Nebraska back up by two scores.

Another quick defensive stop, set up Rule's final touchdown with just under six minutes left in the game, before Guthrie's interception gave Colandrea and the offense a short field for the final score.

Nebraska returns to action next Saturday when the Huskers play host to Bowling Green. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at Memorial Stadium with live television coverage on FS1.
