Jamal Rule had an impressive collegiate debut against Ohio, totaling 169 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on only 17 touches. He rushed 15 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns while catching two passes for 47 yards and one score. His 122 rushing yards marked the first 100-yard rushing game by a Husker freshman running back in a season opener since 2004. Rule also became just the sixth Big Ten freshman since 1995 to have two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the same game. He was graded as the nation's No. 2 running back in Week 1 by PFF College. For his performance against Ohio, Rule was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Before Nebraska (Charlotte Christian HS)
Rule was a standout running back for Charlotte Christian School in North Carolina. He rushed for more than 2,500 yards in his final two seasons, averaging more than 160 rushing yards per game.

Rule rushed for more than 1,200 yards as both a junior and senior at Charlotte Christian. He had 173 carries for 1,362 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior, according to MaxPreps. He was also a threat in the passing game, catching 25 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown. As a junior, Rule had 1,236 rushing yards in only seven games, averaging 176.6 rushing yards per game. He scored 15 touchdowns as a junior while adding 12 receptions for 121 yards and one score.
 
Rule was a three-star prospect who was regarded as one of the top 50 running back prospects nationally. He was the No. 34 running back recruit in the country according to Rivals.
