Before Nebraska (Wilkes-Barre HS/St. Thomas More [Conn.])
Mekhi Nelson was a standout for Wilkes-Barre High School in Pennsylvania before playing his final season at St. Thomas More prep school in Connecticut. He initially intended to play two seasons at St. Thomas More before deciding to join the Huskers after one year.
At Wilkes-Barre High School, Nelson rushed for more than 2,200 yards according to MaxPreps. He ran for 1,670 yards as a junior, scoring 22 touchdowns. He averaged 7.6 yards per carry and 151.8 yards per game as a junior with eight 100-yard rushing games. In his sophomore season, Nelson rushed for 586 yards and nine touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 427 yards and three touchdowns at Wilkes-Barre.
