Huskers Sweep Team Titles at Musco Twilight

Iowa City, Iowa- A total of 14 event wins highlighted competition for the Nebraska track and field team at the Musco Twilight hosted by the University of Iowa on Saturday. The Huskers swept the team titles in dominating fashion as the women totaled 221.50 points and the men had 190 total points.

Behind a personal-best throw of 169-9 (51.75), Annie Jackson took the women’s discus title. Her mark vaults her to first in the conference entering this weekend’s competition. She earned another win in the women’s shot put, posting a season-best of 53-5 ¾ (16.30). Carlie Pinkelman came in second with a throw of 51-9 ¾ (15.79) and Veronica Grizzle was fourth with a throw of 48-9 ½ (14.87). Grizzle won the women’s hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 204-4 (62.29), also moving to first in the league, while Pinkelman was fifth with a personal-best throw of 186-8 (56.89) good for sixth in the Big Ten.

Chad Wright posted a victory in the men’s shot put, recording a throw of 61-4 (18.69), while Will Lohman came in second with a throw of 60-3 ¼ (18.37). Wright tallied a second-place finish in the men’s discus invitational. He recorded a throw of 203-11 (62.15). In the other section of the discus, Christian Hodson finished first with a throw of 161-2 (49.12) On the men’s side of the hammer throw, Lohman came in fourth with a throw of 198-9 (60.59). Anne Martin posted a win in the women’s javelin with a throw of 134-11 (41.12), as Grizzle came in second with a throw of 128-5 (39.15).

Paula Andrie continued her winning ways in the women’s pole vault, finishing first with a jump of 13-5 ¼ (4.10). Maggie Maher followed her lead with a second-place finish and a vault of 12-11 ½ (3.95), while Tess Merrill was fifth, clearing 12-5 ½ (3.80). Craig Driver came in third for the men, clearing 17-0 (5.18), while Christian Sanderfer was fourth with a clearance at the same height, setting a season best.

In the women’s triple jump, Mollie Gribbin tallied a second-place finish with a jump of 40-11 ¾ (12.49), while Anna Weigandt was third with a jump of 40-3 ¼ (12.27) and Danielle Jones finished fourth with a jump of 39-3 (11.96). Devandrew Johnson came in third on the men’s side with a season-best leap of 49-7 (15.11). Travis Englund was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6-11 (2.11). In the women’s high jump, Melissa-Maree Farrington finished third with a leap of 5-5 (1.65), while Martin cleared the same height to also tie for third.

Englund then went on to win the men’s long jump as he recorded a season-best leap of 23-11 ¾ (7.31). Johnson helped NU to the one-two finish in the event with a second-place standing and a mark of 23-10 ¾ (7.28). In the women’s long jump, Jazmin McCoy came in second with a leap of 19-6 ¾ (5.96), as Gribbin was fourth with a mark of 19-0 ¾ (5.81) and Farrington came in fifth with a jump of 18-10 (5.74).

Ellie Grooters tallied another win in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.62, setting the Musco Twilight meet record. Her time is second in the conference and 12th in the nation. On the men’s side Jodi-Rae Blackwood came in third with a season-best time of 50.87. Tibor Koroknai was fifth with a time of 51.29.

Connor Gibson crossed the finish line first in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:26.77. Kristi Oslund finished fourth in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.95. Trevor Vidlak tallied a victory in the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:32.14, while Matthew Bloch was fourth with a time of 14:47.77. Anna Peer was third in the women’s 3,000 meters with a time of 10:05.16.

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Melissa-Maree Farrington came in third with a time of 14.23, followed by Mila Andric at fourth with a time of 14.29. Tibor Koroknai finished third for the men with a personal-best mark of 14.14, as Sean Pille was fifth with a time of 14.30.

In the men’s 400 meters, Levi Gipson came in first with a season-best time of 46.63. Cody Rush was third with a time of 46.88 and Jake Bender came in fifth with a time of 47.28. In the women’s 400 meters, Mara Weekes tallied a second-place finish and a time of 54.57. Brena Andrews finished fourth in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 12.02. Ellen Dougherty finished fifth in the women’s 800 meters as she came in with a time of 2:10.50. Jacob Holtmeier was fourth for the men with a personal-best time of 1:51.05. Rush also finished fifth in the men’s 200 meters with a time of 21.82.  

The women’s 4x100-meter relay squad of Jazmin McCoy, Mara Weekes, Brena Andrews and Breunna McCarty crossed the finish line first with a time of 45.58. The men’s team of John Welk, Dexter McKenzie, Jodi-Rae Blackwood and Cody Rush also came in first with a time of 40.49. The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Levi Gipson, Cody Rush, Drew Wiseman and Jake Bender claimed the event title with a time of 3:12.31. The women’s team of Mara Weekes, Brena Andrews, Ellie Grooters and Kadecia Baird finished third with a time of 3:45.92.

The Huskers have one regular season meet left as NU will host the Nebraska Invite next Saturday, May 10 at Ed Weir Stadium.
