Ames, Iowa- With the NCAA Indoor Championships just one week away, a small contingent of the Nebraska track and field team traveled to Ames, Iowa, on Saturday for the ISU Qualifier. The Huskers were trying to improve their marks on the NCAA list to better their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Chris Phipps finished first in the men’s triple jump, recording a leap of 51-2 1/4 (15.60), while Patrick Raedler came away with a second-place finish. He posted a personal-best jump of 51-1 (15.57). Anna Weigandt won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 40-8 1/4 (12.40).
Raedler took home top honors in the men’s long jump, recording a mark of 24-10 (7.57), while Bobby Carter followed his lead with a second-place finish on a jump of 24-3 (7.39). Scott Jorgenson finished fourth with a leap of 22-10 (6.96).
Maggie Maher finished in fourth-place in the women’s pole vault, notching a mark of 12-8 (3.86). Travis Englund finished the men’s high jump with a mark of 6-4 1/4 (1.94).
Tommy Brinn finished fourth in the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:52.22, as Dexter McKenzie turned in a sixth-place finish in the men’s 200 meters, recording a time of 21.60.
Meanwhile, competition continued on the campus of the University of Notre Dame after an impressive first day at the Alex Wilson Invitational where the Husker women’s distance medley relay team qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. On Saturday afternoon Blaire Dinsdale finished the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.84 to come in 13th.
Two Huskers have already posted automatic-qualifying marks for the national meet, including Luke Pinkelman (shot put) and Bjorn Barrefors (heptathlon) in addition to the women’s distance medley relay team of Jessica Furlan, Mara Weekes, Ellie Grooters and Ashley Miller. The rest of NU's team will now have to wait until Monday night when the NCAA releases its list of qualifiers for the national meet. The meet will be hosted by Boise State in Boise, Idaho, on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10.
