Eugene, Ore. - Long jumpers Chris Phipps and Nicholas Gordon were joined by 110-meter hurdler Lehann Fourie on the All-America podium as three Huskers grabbed top-eight finishes on the final day of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
For the first time since 1997, Nebraska crowned two All-Americans in the long jump, led by Phipps' fifth-place finish with a leap of 25-4 ?. Gordon, the 2009 NCAA indoor national champion, placed eighth with a jump of 24-11 ? to claim his third All-America honor, while Phipps received his first.
Phipps, a sophomore from Patterson, N.J., made a significant improvement from his 23rd-place finish a year ago. After jumping 25-0 ? to qualify for the finals, Phipps accounted for his best leap on his final attempt (25-4 ?) to grab the fifth-place spot. Gordon made his best jump on his second attempt of the day (24-11 ?) but did not better his mark in the finals.
Fourie captured the best outdoor performance of his career with his sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (13.68). The Pretoria, South Africa native entered the finals with the third-fastest preliminary time (13.52), but he could not match his seed as three men ran below that mark in the finals. Fourie's All-America honor is the second of his career after finishing seventh at the 2010 NCAA Indoor meet. He did not qualify for outdoor nationals in 2009 and did not finish in 2008.
In his second NCAA Championship appearance, senior Trey Jordan bettered his outdoor finish with a 19th-place showing in the shot put. The junior college transfer tallied his best throw on his second attempt with a mark of 57-2 ?.
The Husker men finished 16th in the team standings with 16 points, while the NU women were 19th with 14 points. It marks the highest finish for the men since 2006 (14th) and the best for the women since 2007 (18th).
After its Saturday performances, Nebraska totaled nine All-Americans at the four-day meet to total 585 in program history. In addition to Gordon, Phipps and Fourie, Epley Bullock (high jump), Tyler Hitcher (discus), Chantae McMillan (heptathlon), Adam Wolkins (javelin), Paul Hamilton (high jump) and Natalie Willer (pole vault) garnered All-America honors this week in Oregon.
