Huskers Secure 14 Bids to NCAA Indoor Championships

Lincoln ? On Monday night the NCAA Track and Field Committee released the list of accepted entries into the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, with 14 Huskers earning a spot in Fayetteville, Ark. Prior to the official release, seven Huskers had already had punched their ticket with automatic-qualifying performances during the 2010 regular season, including high jumpers Paul Hamilton and Epley Bullock, combined eventers Bjorn Barrefors and Chantae McMillan, pole vaulter Natalie Willer, long jumper Nicholas Gordon and 60-meter hurdler Lehann Fourie

The seven automatic qualifiers will be joined by 60-meter hurdler Tyrell Ross, high jumpers Brandon Sheppard and Audrey Svane, long jumper Bobby Carter, triple jumper Leandra McGruder, miler Ashley Miller and pentathlete Megan Wheatley.

While eight Huskers are veterans of the NCAA Indoor Championships, six NU athletes will be making their first appearance at the indoor meet, including Ross, Sheppard, Carter, Miller, Svane and McGruder.

Entering the meet ranked 11th on the men’s side and 14th on women’s side in the latest USTFCCCA rankings, the Huskers will be looking for each team to finish in the top 15 for the first time since 2006, when the women tied for 16th and the men tied for 12th. Last season, Gordon’s national title in the long jump led the men’s team to a tie for fifth, which was their highest finish at the indoor meet 1996 when they finished second to George Mason. In 2009 the NU women placed 29th, their top finish since 2006.
