Huskers Post 4-1 Win in Game One

Lincoln - On the strength of a four-run fourth inning and another strong outing from senior right-hander Ashley DeBuhr, the Nebraska softball team took game one of Monday's doubleheader with South Dakota State by a score of 4-1.

DeBuhr (14-6) allowed only one run on two hits, while striking out 10 and walking none. Her efforts improved Nebraska to 28-13 on the season.

Jenna Marston (6-8) took the loss for South Dakota State, which dropped to 10-19 on the season. In a complete-game effort, Marston allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits.

After failing to record a hit through the first three innings, the Huskers fared much better the second time through the order.  The first four batters each singled to begin the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of senior Devin Porter. Following a strikeout, senior Jamie Waldecker singled home sophomore Crystal Carwile to put the Huskers up 3-0.

NU capped the inning with a fourth run when Porter scored from third as Waldecker was tagged out in a rundown between first and second after attempting to steal.

South Dakota State answered with its lone run in the top of the fifth. Kiley Schwedhelm became the Jackrabbits' first base runner when she reached on a one-out bloop single between the circle and second base. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Teresa Howell.

DeBuhr then retired the final eight batters of the game to wrap up her 14th victory of the season.

Porter led NU offensively, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and she was also hit by a pitch.

The Huskers will look for a doubleheader sweep in game two.
