Honolulu, Hawaii ? Just as it did on Friday, the Hawaii softball team twice rallied from behind to post a 6-5 victory over the 15th-ranked Huskers on Sunday in the third-place game of the Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.
After trailing 4-2 and 5-4, Tyleen Tausaga's two-run, fifth-inning home run capped the comeback win for the Rainbow Wahine (5-1).
Although the Huskers (4-3) scored a season-high five runs, they were unable to capitalize on many more scoring opportunities. Nebraska pounded out eight hits and were aided by six Hawaii errors. NU left a total off 11 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded three times through the first four innings.
Senior right-hander Ashley DeBuhr (3-1) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work. DeBuhr relieved freshman starter Alex Hupp, who allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in three innings.
Jessica Morton (2-0) earned the victory for Hawaii, tossing 3.2 shutout innings of one-hit relief.
Hawaii took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally and the help of a Husker error. After NU retired the first two hitters, Brandi Peiler doubled and Kate Robinson followed with an RBI single that fell just inside the left field foul line and just out of the reach of Haley Long.
Leading 1-0, Robinson scored on the next play when a pop up to the second baseman was dropped following a collision that put the Rainbow Wahine up by two.
Nebraska answered right back in the top of the third by scoring a season-high four runs and batting around for the first time in 2007. Senior Devin Porter led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when the left fielder misplayed the ball.
Following a strikeout, senior Jamie Waldecker reached safely when Hawaii tried to get Porter at third, but was unsuccessful. Long then added an RBI single that scored Porter and cut the lead to 2-1.
With two on, sophomore Crystal Carwile, the Huskers’ RBI leader in 2006, ripped a two-run triple to the gap in left center to drive in Waldecker and Long. Carwile herself scored after the left fielder made an errant throw to the plate.
Leading 4-2, the Huskers would load the bases with two outs for Porter, who ripped the first pitch she saw directly at the right fielder for the third out.
As they did in Friday’s game, the Rainbow Wahine answered the Huskers’ big inning. A hit batter and double put runners at second and third before Claire Warick’s one-out, two-run double tied the score at 4-4.
Nebraska regained the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth, but the Huskers left the bases loaded for the third time in the game. A Hawaii error helped lead to the run as Carwile ripped a single over the center fielder’s head with runners on first and second. Waldecker scored from second on the play, but only after the cutoff throw bounced away from the second baseman.
The Huskers loaded the bases with only one out before a pair of flyouts stranded NU’s seventh, eight and ninth runners of the first four innings.
Missed opportunities were an unfortunate theme of the tournament for the Huskers. Nebraska played a total of 49 innings over the weekend and had at least one baserunner in 35 of those frames (71 percent). The Huskers left a total of 49 runners on base in seven games.
NU will be off next weekend before returning to action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Feb. 23-25.
