Nebraska Falls to Portland State

Honolulu, Hawaii ? A day after defeating PortlandState, 1-0, Nebraska was on the other end of the shutout as the 15th-ranked Husker softball team fell to the Vikings, 2-0, on Saturday in the opening round of bracket play at the Paradise Classic.

 

With the loss, NU dropped to 3-2 on the season and will face No. 24 Auburn tomorrow at Noon (Central) in the fifth-place game. If the Huskers win that contest, they will advance to the third-place game immediately following the fifth-place game.

 

Sophomore Molly Hill suffered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits. Hill did strike out 11, but fell to 0-2 on the year after posting a school-best winning percentage with an 18-2 record in 2006.

 

Mandy Hill (1-3), Friday’s loser to Nebraska, earned the win for PortlandState (1-4), which advanced to Sunday’s championship game. Hill tossed her first shutout of the season, allowing just four hits while striking out six.

 

Portland State jumped out to a quick lead when Stephanie Bean drilled a 1-0 offering over the 200-foot sign in right center for a solo home run in the top of the first.

 

After being retired in order in the first, the Huskers threatened to tie the game in the second. Senior Devin Porter ripped a one-out double and sophomore Haley Long followed with a single to left. Porter attempted to score on the play but a perfect throw from left fielder Kimi Daniel nailed Porter at the plate.

 

That would prove to be the closest the Huskers got to plating a run, despite getting their leadoff runner on base in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

 

The Vikings added to their lead in the fourth when Hill led off with a single, pinch runner Jessica Maielua stole second and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Brandi Scoggins.

 

Nebraska managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after Porter was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, but a fly out, strike out and pop out ended the game.
