NU Places 16 on Track Coaches All-Academic Team

LINCOLN?Sixteen Nebraska athletes were named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team released Friday. The squad included nine members of the NU women’s team and seven Husker men.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, an athlete must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher in addition to having met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in his/her event during the 2006 season.

CoSIDA Academic All-Americans Ashley Selig and Jenny Green headlined the NU women’s honorees. Selig recently became only the fifth Husker to be named a women’s track and field first-team academic All-American, while Green, who was named to the third team, notched the first honor for a sophomore Nebraska women’s track athlete.

Selig and Green were joined on the USTFCCCA squad by Sara Jane Baker, Jessie Graff, Elizabeth Lange, Justine Roach, Jamie Senkbile, Jeni Steiner and Kayla Wilkinson. Baker (2004), Graff (2004), Green (2004), Selig (2003, 2004) and Wilkinson (2004) each had been named to the team in previous seasons. The nine Huskers trailed only BYU’s 10 selections for most athletes on the women’s team.

Among Nebraska’s seven men’s selections were second-team academic All-Americans Aaron Plas and Nate Probasco. The recognition was the third career honor by the coaches association for Plas (2003, 2004), while Probasco (2004) added his second award.

Joining Plas and Probasco were Tom Donlin, Keith Lloyd, Lee Martin, Nic Petersen and Ben Schutter. Petersen (2003) earned his second career nod from the NCAA track coaches. BYU (12) owned the most men’s All-Academic selections.
