Lincoln -- The No. 53 Nebraska women's tennis team fell to 13-6 on the season with a 9-0 loss to No. 13 Kansas Wednesday afternoon at the Woods Tennis Center. With the win, the Jayhawks improve to 15-2 overall and remain undefeated in the Big 12 Conference with a 7-0 record. The Huskers, who saw their four-match winning streak end with the loss, fall to 3-5 in the Big 12.
Nebraska had their best chances for wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, Husker sophomore Sandra Noetzel batted KU senior Christie Sim, ranked No. 35 nationally, to three sets before falling 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Senior Lisa Hart also went to three sets at No. 2 singles before falling to junior Kris Sell, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Gina Pelazini also played well despite losing 6-4, 6-4 to sophomore Julia Sidorova at No. 4 singles. Pelazini has played No. 4 singles since freshman Ndali Ijomah's injury three weeks ago.
"I thought we had several chances at singles, especially at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4," Nebraska Coach Scott Jacobson said. "Even though she lost, I thought that Gina played her best match of the season."
"Kansas is one of the best teams in the nation," Jacobson said. " I thought we played a lot better then the score indicated. Even though we lost the match, I thought we played some of our best singles matches all year."
In doubles, Noetzel and senior Jennifer Thoste played well, but lost to Sim and sophomore Brooke Chiller, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.
The Huskers return to action this Friday, March 10, when the Huskers travel to Iowa State for a 3:30 p.m. match with the Cyclones.
