2015 Season Highlights

Junior Season [2014]
Kylee Muir switched to the outfield in 2014 and earned the most extensive playing time of her career. She entered the season with 33 career games played and 13 starts in her first four years in the Husker program. In 2014, Muir eclipsed both of those totals, appearing in 54 games with 53 starts, including 41 starts in right field, eight in left and four as the designated player.

Muir not only earned a starting role, she was also a very productive player in a record-setting Husker lineup. Despite a slow start to the season, Muir finished with a .266 average, 12 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBIs. She not only set career highs in every offensive category, Muir exceeded her career total in every category. She also drew 20 walks on the season and made a smooth transition to the outfield, posting a 1.000 fielding percentage in 28 chances. Muir totaled nine multi-RBI games and six multi-hit efforts as a junior. She proved to be a clutch hitter, as she posted a .309 average with runners in scoring position.

In Big Ten Conference play, Muir batted .354 with nine doubles, two homers and 21 RBIs in only 23 games. She ranked second in the league in doubles in conference games, and Muir led Nebraska with a .464 batting average (13-for-28) with runners in scoring position during the league slate. The outstanding Big Ten season highlighted an overall strong finish to Muir’s junior season. Muir’s season average stood at .189 following the final game of March, before she went on a tear.

After settling into her everyday role, Muir hit .338 over the final two months of the season, going 27-for-80 during that stretch. Eleven of her 12 doubles came in the final two months, while she added 20 runs, 13 walks, two homers and 23 RBIs over the season’s final 28 games. Muir also produced five of her six multi-hit efforts and five of her nine multi-RBI performances in April and May.

Muir had several clutch hits for Nebraska during the second half of the season. She hit her first career grand slam and produced a then-career-high four RBIs against Iowa State in Nebraska’s home opener on March 19. Muir then produced three RBIs in a win at Illinois on April 5, a victory that began a 15-1 conference finish that allowed the Huskers to grab a share of the Big Ten regular-season title. She had five hits and three RBIs in a three-game series against Illinois the following weekend, before producing four RBIs in a sweep of Ohio State. Muir produced the game-winning RBI at Michigan State on April 6 and then put on a show in the regular-season finale against Indiana. With a share of the conference title on the line, Muir went 2-for-3 against the Hoosiers with a homer, a double and a career-high five RBIs. Nebraska trailed 2-1 before Muir hit a grand slam to power the Huskers to the victory.

Off the field, Muir was named an academic All-Big Ten selection for the third straight season in 2014. She also earned a spot on Nebraska’s Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Sophomore Season [2013]
Another dedicated offseason of work paid off for Muir in 2013, as she enjoyed the best season of her career while earning the most playing time of her career. Chosen as Nebraska’s Lifter of the Year in a vote of her teammates for the second straight year, Muir earned nine starts in 2013 and made 16 pinch-hitting appearances.

Muir posted an impressive .293 batting average, totaling 12 hits, six runs, three doubles, one homer and six RBIs in 41 at bats. Entering the season, Muir had recorded a total of two hits, two RBIs, no extra-base hits and no runs scored in 15 at bats.

She earned the start in four of Nebraska’s five games during the opening weekend and delivered in a big way. Muir went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs in the season opener against Illinois-Chicago. She matched her career totals in hits and RBIs in the game, surpassed her career walk total and produced her first career extra-base hit and run scored in Nebraska’s 14-5 victory. She then went 2-for-2 with a double the next day in another matchup against UIC. The following day, Muir had another big day against the Flames, recording two hits for the third straight game. She finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and her sixth-inning home run tied the game and forced extra innings, where the Huskers prevailed in eight innings, thanks in part to her game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Muir capped a terrific opening weekend with a 1-for-3 effort against New Mexico. Overall, Muir was 7-for-11 (.636) with three doubles, one homer, four RBIs and three runs scored in the opening weekend.

Muir extended her season-opening hit streak to five games with a 1-for-3 performance against Southern Utah the next weekend in her fourth straight start. She added a run and an RBI against the Thunderbirds. In March, Muir picked up her first pinch hit against New Mexico State, and she then produced an RBI off the bench against Purdue on April 20. She started a five-run, sixth-inning rally that propelled Nebraska past No. 9 Michigan on April 28 with a leadoff single. Muir’s pinch-hitting success continued in the postseason, when she went 2-for-2 in a pair of pinch-hitting roles at the Women’s College World Series. She ignited another rally against No. 2 Florida, beginning the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit single. The Huskers went on to score three times in the frame to force extra innings.

Medical Hardship [2012]
Muir appeared in only one game as a sophomore, grounding out in a pinch-hit at bat against South Dakota. Among other injuries, Muir suffered a hand injury in March and was lost for the season. The NCAA awarded Muir a medical hardship for the 2012 season and granted her a sixth year of eligibility.

Redshirt Freshman Season [2011]
After redshirting in her first year with the program in 2010, Muir appeared in seven games in 2011. Muir started four games as the designated player and came on to hit in three other games, as she did not see game action in the field during her redshirt freshman season. Muir produced a two-run single in her first career at bat against her hometown school Portland State in the Huskers’ season opener on Feb. 10. That at bat earned her the first start of her career the next day against San Jose State. Muir also started the Huskers’ Big 12 Conference games against No. 5 Texas and No. 22 Texas A&M, facing a second-team All-America pitcher in each of those starts. Muir’s other start came at Creighton on April 13, when she went 1-for-3 and lined a single off the outfield fence. She walked in her only plate appearance of the NCAA Tournament against Pacific.

Before Nebraska
Muir is the first Oregon recruit to play for the Huskers since the early 1990s and only the fifth ever. The first Oregon native to play at Nebraska was current Husker Head Coach Rhonda Revelle.

Regarded as one of the top power-hitting prospects in the country coming out of high school, Muir hit 12 home runs in the summer of 2007 while playing for the Northwest Bullets, an elite travel ball team coached by her father, Dennis.

Muir played her prep ball at Lincoln High School in Portland, enjoying a decorated four-year career. She was a four-time all-state selection, earning Class 4A honorable-mention accolades as a freshman, before garnering second-team honors in 2007. As a junior, Muir was a third-team selection in Class 6A, Oregon’s largest classification. She then went on to earn first-team honors as a senior in 2009. Muir was also a four-time, first-team All-Portland Interscholastic League selection, earning co-Most Valuable Player honors in 2007 and Player-of-the-Year distinction as a senior in 2009.

As a junior, Muir led Oregon’s largest class with a slugging percentage of 1.222 and an on-base percentage of .711. She also ranked second in the state in walks (18) and third with a .519 batting average. Muir helped lead Lincoln to three consecutive appearances in the state playoffs.

In the summer, Muir put up impressive numbers while helping lead the Bullets to a 17th-place finish at the 2008 ASA Gold National Championship and a top-10 finish in 2009. Previously, Muir was a member of the Bullets’ state and regional championship teams in 2003 (12-and-under), 2004 (14-and-under) and 2005 (16-and-under).

Personal
Kylee Denise Muir was born on Nov. 3, 1990, in McMinnville, Ore. She is the daughter of Dennis Muir and Melody Cobb and the step-daughter of Marcy Muir. Kylee has two brothers, Tyler and Bennett, and two sisters, Tori and Kaitlin. Kylee earned her degree in criminology and criminal justice in May of 2015. She was a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection and a seven-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Muir also earned a spot on the 2014 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
