Huskers Take Home Five Event Titles at ESU Spring Open

Emporia, Kan. – While select members of the Nebraska track and field team were competing in Texas and Arizona this weekend, the rest of the Huskers took to the track at the Emporia Spring Open in Emporia, Kan., on Saturday.

The Huskers came away with five individual wins on the day as Jacob Olson won the 5,000 meters, Will Lohman took home the shot put and hammer throw titles, Brena Andrews won the 200 meters and Breunna McCarty won the 100 meters.

NU posted a one-two finish in the men’s 5,000 meters as Olson led the way with a time of 15:09.72. Matt Gilbert came in second with a time of 15:38.53.

Lohman won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 60-5 ¼ (18.42) and was also the top collegiate finisher in the men’s hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 195-2 (59.48). Christian Hodson came in second in the discus with a throw of 168-9 ½ (51.44) and Payton Davidson finished fourth with a throw of 165-9 ¼ (50.52). Ryan Hircock finished seventh overall with a mark of 159-8 ½ (48.67). Jacob Griess was 10th in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 172-2 ¾ (52.49).

McCarty won the women’s 100 meters with a time of 12.15. She also finished ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.34. London Hawk finished second in the 400 meters, recording a time of 49.00. Brenna Andrews won the 200 meters with a time of 25.16.

Annie Jackson finished second in the discus with a throw of 145-9 (44.42), while Tristen Sharp was second in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 185-8 ½ (56.60) and Veronica Grizzle was third with a throw of 179-9 (54.78) and Carlie Pinkelman came in fourth with a throw of 174-0 ¾ (53.05). Mary Lloyd finished sixth with a throw of 166-0 ¾ (50.61).

Sarah Firestone came in second in the women’s javelin with a mark of 148-4 ¼ (45.21), as Veronica Grizzle was sixth with a throw of 135-5 ½ (41.28) and Maddie Osmundson notched a throw of 119-10 ½ (36.53) for 16th.

Alney Tobias came in third overall in the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:54.91, while Jackson Barbour was fifth with a time of 1:55.47. Jacob Holtmeier came in seventh with a time of 1:56.04. Nolan Border also finished with a time of 2:00.87 and London Hawk posted a time of 2:22.01.

Tobias came in seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:02.04, while Nolan Border was eighth with a time of 4:02.14. Jacob Holtmeier came in 11th with a time of 4:05.59. Mark Hilderbrand finished fourth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.72.

Sarah Plambeck came in sixth in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:18.74 and also posted a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:38.32. Isabel Andrade was 12th with a time of 4:49.23. She also finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:15.81.

The Huskers will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., next weekend for the Arkansas Spring Invitational.
