Huskers Capture 18th Masters Classic Title, Notch Season-High Score

Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team captured four individual titles and posted their best score of the season to win their 18th Masters Classic title Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center. NU took first in the meet with a season-best 196.50, ahead of Iowa (195.50), Kentucky (194.65) and Bowling Green (189.45). The Huskers are now 7-7 (3-1 Big 12) on the year.

 

Nebraska took top honors on vault with Erin Davis 9.95 on the event. Davis, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation on the event, had previously hit that score at Michigan on Feb. 13. The Huskers produced a three-way tie on bars, as Janelle Giblin , Emily Wong and Maria Scaffidi all notched scores of 9.875 for first, all of which had previously capture one bars title on the season. Maddie Steinauer and Brittnee Habbib both hit a 9.825 on beam for top honors. Steinauer previously notched two beam titles, while this honor marks the second such honor for Habbib. Lora Evenstad took the floor crown with a season-high 9.925. It was the sixth floor crown of the season for Evenstad.

 

Nebraska opened the meet with one of their best vault performances of the season. Davis hit a 9.95 for the second time this season to take first, while Evenstad tied her career-high of 9.90 for the fourth time. Jamie Schleppenbach tallied a career-high 9.875 for the fourth time. Brittany Skinner hit a 9.85, and Janelle Giblin tabbed a score of 9.825 on the event. NU tallied a total of 49.40 for first-place, ahead of Iowa (48.90), Kentucky (48.65) and Bowling Green (47.325).

 

The Huskers moved to bars where Giblin, Wong and Scaffidi all notched a 9.875 on the event to take the bars title. The score was a career-high for all three girls. Brittnee Habbib and Evenstad both tabbed a 9.80, giving NU a bars total of 49.225. Nebraska finished the second rotation with a 98.625, ahead of Iowa (97.975), Kentucky (97.575) and Bowling Green (93.05).

 

NU continued to beam as Steinauer and Habbib both posted a 9.825. The score matched Habbib’s season-high total. Wong hit a 9.775, while Skinner notched a 9.725 and Giblin added a score of 9.45. Nebraska posted a beam total of 48.60, giving them a running score of 147.225 to extend their lead over the Hawkeyes (146.90), Wildcats (146.30) and Falcons (141.55).

 

Nebraska capped the evening on floor as Evenstad catapulted the Huskers with a career-high-tying 9.925 for the floor crown. Davis and Giblin both posted a pair of 9.85s each, while Wong and Steinauer notched a 9.825 apiece. The Huskers tabbed a 49.275 on the event and notched their 18th Masters Classic crown with a season-best 196.50. Iowa came in second, tallying a 195.50, Kentucky took third with a 194.65 and Bowling Green came in fourth, totaling a 189.45.

 

The Huskers host Arizona State on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. The women will compete in a dual meet with the men, as they take on Stanford.
