Review: Nebraska Finishes Third at Big Red Invitational

The Nebraska bowling team finished in third-place at the second-annual Big Red Invitational held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. The Huskers, who sat in sixth-place after the first day of competition, stormed back Friday to take over second-place, and fell a spot on Saturday, the final day of the Invite.

Central Missouri finished the event in first place with a 203.51 total average, ahead of Vanderbilt at 202.96 and Nebraska with a 201.16 average on the tournament.

Nebraska's Danielle van der Meer finished with the second-highest average of the tournament, earning a spot on the all-tournament team with her 221 average. Van der Meer was topped only by Kara Richard from Central Missouri, who had the highest average of the tournament at 233.

"I am extremely proud of my team," van der Meer said. "I think it is a little sad that we struggled with being consistent, and I think that is why we fell behind on the first day. I think if we had a day like this on Thursday, we would have walked away with the championship. Friday was one of those days where everyone had consistent shots and pinfall. Sometimes you need a day like Thursday to bowl well on Friday."

"The way the team performed yesterday and today, holy cow, I couldn't be more proud," Head Coach Bill Straub said. "For the most part, everybody played extremely well. I'm proud."

The Huskers will enjoy a lengthy break until Feb. 19-20th when the team will travel to Baltimore, Md. to take part in the Morgan State Invitational.
