Tucson, Ariz. ? The Nebraska track and field team added another Jim Click title on Saturday as the No. 10 Husker men scored a meet-high 227 points to down Minnesota (130), California (77.5), Kansas State (74.5) and Arizona (66). On the women’s side, the No. 16 Huskers finished fourth with 110 points, while individually senior Epley Bullock tied the school record in the women’s high jump.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Bullock shined in her first meet of the 2010 outdoor season with a personal-best leap of 6-2 1/4. Fresh off her fourth career All-America honor in the indoor high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships three weeks ago, Bullock add a full inch to her previous best with the leap, as she finished second to Arizona’s Brigetta Barrett on more misses. The jump moved Bullock from No. 3 on the all-time NU outdoor performance list into a tie with Cris Hall for the school record.
Leading the way for the men’s dominant performance was senior Lukas Hulett, who contributed three first-place finishes. Hulett took the 400 meters (47.15), clocked a personal best of 21.17 in the 200 meters and ran the anchor leg of the men’s 4x100-meter relay that cleared 40.38.
The men also performed well in the field, where Brett Suckstorf and Chris Phipps each reached personal bests, while Adam Wolkins won his second straight javelin title with a throw of 222-10. After setting a personal best of 197-4 in the hammer throw last weekend at the Stanford Invitational, Suckstorf added even more to his PR with a third-place toss of 201-09 to become just the fifth thrower in school history to top 200 feet or more in the hammer. Phipps took top honors in the long jump with a leap of 25-4 3/4, breaking his previous best of 25-0 3/4.
Back on the women’s side, Jade Hodson, Arna Erega and Natalie Willer all showed they are in strong early-season form. Hodson exploded in the hammer throw with a toss of 182-5, which topped her previous best of 172-11 by nearly 10 feet. Erega then cut one-hundredth of a second off her 100-meter hurdle best with a time of 13.55. Willer made her outdoor debut on the right foot with a vault of 14-0, as she defeated Minnesota’s Alicia Rue (13-7 3/4).
The Huskers will now head back to Lincoln, where they will host their first home meet of the 2010 outdoor season next weekend on Friday and Saturday. The men’s and women’s hammer throw will be the only event contested on Friday, as it will take place at “The Rock” at 3 p.m. Saturday’s action is set for a 11 a.m. start at Ed Weir Stadium with the women’s shot put, men’s javelin and women’s long jump. The women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase will be the first even on the track at 1:30 p.m. More information can be found at Huskers.com.
