Philadelphia, Pa. ? With the majority of the Nebraska track and field team competing close to home at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Huskers were also well represented at one of the other top meets of the outdoor season on Friday, the Penn Relays.
After setting the school record at last season’s Penn Relays with a second-place time of 54.90 in the 4x110-shuttle hurdle relay, the Huskers settled for runner-up honors again on Friday at Franklin Field. With Eric Lund, Lehann Fourie and Tyrell Ross back from last year’s record-setting squad, Teran Walford replaced the departed Kirkland Thornton to help the team finish with a time of 56.53. NU was less than one-tenth of a second off Clemson’s winning time of 56.45.
Individually, Fourie and Ross then both advanced to Saturday’s championship final of the 110-meter hurdles. Fourie won his heat with the third-best preliminary time at 13.83, while Ross placed second in his heat and ran the sixth-best overall time at 14.04. LSU’s Barrett Nugent ran the top preliminary time at 13.76.
One week after winning the 400 hurdles at the Kansas Relays, Lund placed eighth out of 43 hurdles in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.15.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Scott Wims, Lukas Hulett, Dan Christensen and Dax Danns advanced in with the 12th-best preliminarily time at 40.70. NU will now run in the consolation final tomorrow at 12:20 p.m. (Central).
In the jumps, Nicholas Gordon and Bobby Carter both finished in the top eight of the championship division of the long jump. Gordon finished fifth with season-best and wind-aided jump of 25-0 3/4, while Carter placed eighth with a leap of 24-6 1/4. Epley Bullock placed third in the championship division of the high jump with a leap of 5-10 1/2. After 5-10 1/2, Bullock was one of five jumpers to move to the 6-0 bar, where Brittani Carter of LSU took the win, as she was the only jumper in the field to clear.
