Huskers Send Out Seniors With Win

Lincoln – No. 11 Nebraska sent its seniors out in style with a 196.45-196.125 win over Iowa State Sunday at the Devaney Center. In front of 1,601 fans, Nebraska honored seniors Kathryn Howard and Kylie Stone, and posted event scores of 49.00 or better on vault, bars and floor.

“I’m really pleased with what we did today,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It was a good day on all events.”

The Huskers had top finishers in all four events, while numerous gymnasts hit new career scores. Nebraska’s two all-arounders tied for second, each receiving total scores of 39.125.

“Our all-arounders did a nice job today,” Kendig said. “Our seniors did a good job, she (Howard) pulled it off on beam. It was a bittersweet day, but we’re happy to celebrate their careers.”

Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Erin Davis took first and hit a 9.925, leading the Huskers in the event. Kristin Fyffe posted a career-high mark of 9.875 as she tied for second, and Maddie Steinauer tied her career high of 9.85. There was a tie at 9.825, with Brittany Skinner and Maria Scaffidi both posting the same score. Nebraska tallied an event score of 49.30, to lead Iowa State’s 49.075.

The Huskers continued on to bars, as Brittnee Habbib earned her third bars crown of the season and tied her career-high score of 9.875. Howard and Skinner both hit a 9.85 to tie for second; the score was career high for Skinner and tied Howard’s career high mark. Lora Evenstad posted a 9.825, while Scaffidi and Kassandra Nathe each received a 9.775. Ending the second rotation, Nebraska finished with a season-high tying event score of 49.175, giving them a total of 98.475, ahead of the Cyclone’s 98.225.

NU moved on to the third rotation on beam, Nathe tallied a 9.85 as she tied for her first beam crown of the season, and Howard received a score of 9.825 for third. Habbib added a 9.80 of her own, and Scaffidi hit a 9.75. Skinner added a 9.65, and Nebraska ended with an event score of 48.875. The Huskers moved into the final rotation ahead of ISU 147.35-147.20.

Nebraska capped the evening on floor, where Evenstad took her fifth floor crown of the season with a 9.875. Habbib posted a 9.825 and tied for second, while Skinner, Steinauer and Davis all added marks of 9.80. Nebraska posted an event score of 49.10, to cement the win over Iowa State, 196.45-196.125.

“Overall, I liked our presentation on floor and we’re getting stronger and stronger on beam,” Kendig said.

Following today’s conference match-up, the Huskers conclude the regular season with a meet at Penn State on Saturday, March 20 in State College, Pa.
