Norman, Okla. – The No. 10 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high 196.225 to take second in a triangular with No. 2 Oklahoma and Texas Woman’s University Friday night at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Huskers, who improved to 6-1 on the year, scored a 49.0 or better on vault, beam and floor.
“The story of the game was that after our performance on bars we went over to beam, and that was something, from beginning to end,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “The fight we showed was incredible, we displayed great routines all the way through.”
NU saw Erin Davis take the vault crown with a 9.90 and Maria Scaffidi earn the all-around title with a 39.225.
“Top to bottom, we had a lot of solid routines,” Kendig said. “They were aggressive and moved well. I was proud of the effort and the energy they kept. I felt like we made up some ground and went to floor and performed some really nice floor routines.“
Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Kassandra Nathe led the way with a 9.80 for third, while Kylie Stone scored a 9.775. Lora Evenstad hit a 9.75, and Scaffidi scored a 9.65. Kathryn Howard also posted a 9.625 to round out the event for the Huskers. NU earned a team total of 48.60 to Oklahoma’s first-rotation vault total of 49.375 and TWU’s 48.30 on beam.
Nebraska continued with an impressive beam performance, where Nathe led the Huskers with a career-high mark of 9.875 as she tied for second-place. Howard and Scaffidi each added a 9.85. The score tied a season-high for Howard and a career-high for Scaffidi. Stone received a 9.825, and Nebraska wrapped up beam with a season-high 49.20 and a running score of 97.80 between OU (98.35) and TWU (96.85) at the halfway point.
NU moved on to floor, lead by a strong performance by Evenstad as she hit a season-high 9.90. Scaffidi posted a 9.875, and Habbib added a season-high 9.85. Davis tallied a 9.825, while Skinner received a 9.725. The Huskers hit a solid 49.175 on the event to give them a running score of 146.975 to sit behind OU (147.225), but ahead of TWU (145.075) heading into the final event.
Nebraska capped the evening on vault, where Davis led the Huskers with a 9.90 to tie for the event crown. Skinner hit a career-high 9.875 to tie for third, and Scaffidi tied her career-high with a 9.85. Evenstad received a 9.825, while Stone hit a 9.80. NU totaled an event score of 49.25 and a final team total of 196.225 for second, behind Oklahoma’s 196.825 and ahead of the Pioneer’s 192.575.
“Overall for us to start the way we did and produce the highest score of the year, I’m really proud of this team.,” Kendig said. “I’m looking forward to next week in Chicago. It’s going to be fun, and we just need to go there and take advantage of the situation and come out with a great meet.”
Nebraska returns to action next Friday, Feb. 12, at the Chicago Style Invite with Illinois, Denver and Iowa. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
