Lincoln, Neb.- The No. 9 Nebraska women's gymnastics team improved to 5-0 after posting a score of 194.70-193.275 to win over Big 12 foe Missouri Saturday at Devaney Center. The meet, which was originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m., was moved to an 11:30 a.m. start time due to the change in tipoff for the men’s basketball game. In their first conference meet of the year, the Huskers took top honors on bars and proved the ability to come back after tying the Tigers halfway through the meet.
“We gave away some things,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “We could have performed better today; we’ve got to compete like we do in practice. We have to do a better job in competition. It’s important for us to compete here like we do in the gym. But overall, it was a good day. We had no major mistakes; we may have just come out a little flat. The important thing is that we came out of this healthy.”
Nebraska opened the evening on vault, where Lora Evenstad and Erin Davis each led the Huskers with scores of 9.80. Maddie Stienauer, Kylie Stone and Kristin Fyffe all added marks of 9.75. Nebraska posted a team score of 48.85 compared to Missouri’s 48.525 on bars.
The Huskers moved to bars, where Stone posted a score of 9.825 to lead the Huskers and take top honors in the event. Evenstad scored a 9.775, and Brittany Skinner made her bars debut with a 9.70. Brittnee Habbib and Maria Scaffidi both hit a 9.675 to give the Huskers an event total of 48.65. NU ended the second rotation in a tie with the Tigers at 97.50.
Nebraska continued on beam as Howard posted a team-high 9.775 for second-place. Steinauer hit a 9.725 for third, and Nathe and Scaffidi both added a pair of 9.70s. Fyffe rounded out the Nebraska rotation with a 9.55. The Huskers totaled an event score of 48.45. NU headed into the final rotation with a 146.00-145.125 lead over Missouri.
The Huskers finished the evening on floor with Evenstad hitting a 9.80 to take second, and Davis and Steinauer each adding a 9.775. Scaffidi received a 9.75, while Skinner notched a 9.65 on the event. NU finished with an event score of 48.75, sealing the 194.70-193.275 win for the Huskers.
"Now our focus turns to Oklahoma,” Kendig said. “It’s going to be a challenge, and I hope our team is up to the challenge all week long. I’m looking forward to going down there and competing against a great team.”
Nebraska returns to action next Friday, Feb. 5, for a conference dual at No. 2 Oklahoma. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m.
