Lincoln – The No. 9 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high team total to defeat No. 15 Michigan 196.025-194.725, Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center. In front of 1,190 fans, NU posted a 49.0 or better on bars and beam, marking season high team totals on bars and on floor. The Huskers were down twice after rallying to top the Wolverines.
“For the first time all season we were down twice,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It didn’t seem to bother or affect us. It was exciting for the crowd to see a meet like this and experience the competition. We had at least six sticks tonight, and the score we got is very excited.”
Junior Erin Davis totaled two event titles on the night. She hit a 9.875 on vault for first, and posted a career high 9.90 on floor for the event crown.
“Erin is becoming a great performer on floor,” Kendig said. “She is tumbling at a high level. This was the best floor performance we’ve had so far. All six of our performers were awesome.”
Nebraska opened the day on vault, as Davisled the way with a 9.875 to take the vault crown for the second week in a row. Kylie Stone added a 9.80 for second, and Lora Evenstad posted a 9.775. Brittany Skinner and Maria Scaffidi closed the event with a 9.75 and 9.65, respectively. The Huskers totaled an event score of 48.95 to Michigan’s 49.05.
The Huskers continued on to bars, where Evenstad posted the team high of 9.875 to come in second in the event. Stone and Habbib each received marks of 9.85 to tie for third. Scaffidi and Nathe also hit a 9.80 to give the Huskers a season high event score of 49.175. Nebraska headed into the third rotation leading Michigan 98.025-97.775.
NU moved on to the third rotation on beam, where Howard and Maddie Steinauer both received a pair of 9.775 for third in the event. The mark tied Steinauer’s career-high score. Habbib hit a 9.75, and Nathe posted a 9.725. Scaffidi rounded out the rotation with a 9.625. The Huskers closed the event with a score of 48.65. NU headed into the final rotation narrowly trailing the Wolverines 146.775-146.675.
The Huskers capped the day in floor, where Evenstad and Davis both hit scores of 9.90 to propel NU in the event. The mark was a career high for Davis and a season high for Evenstad. Scaffidi added a 9.875 and Steinauer hit a career high of 9.825. Skinner also added a career high of 9.85. The Huskers ended the event with a season high score of 49.35. Nebraska came back to beat Michigan 196.025-194.725.
“We’ve got a lot more in us,” Kendig said. “We have to go back and make adjustments and corrections to build on the day.”
Nebraska hosts Missouri in their first Big 12 dual of the season next Saturday, Jan. 30. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m
