Lincoln – The No. 3 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team played host to No. 20 Minnesota and No. 23 Illinois in its first home meet of the year Friday night, posting a 195.20 to top the Fighting Illini and Gophers at the Devaney Center. In front of 1,042 fans, the Huskers posted a 49.375 on vault, marking a new season-high on the event.
Junior Erin Davis starred for the Huskers on the night, nailing her vault to make her the first Husker to receive the perfect score on the event since Emily Parsons at N.C. State in 2007. The last gymnast to earn a 10.0 at the Devaney was UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa at the 2009 Masters Classic.
“She stuck it like dart,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It was a product of what our team is doing. It was big and powerful. Her team really helped her get through it.”
Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Davis provided the highlight of the night by earning a perfect 10.0. Maria Scaffidi, Lora Evenstad and Kylie Stone all added scores of 9.85. Maddie Steinauer hit a 9.825 to give Nebraska an event score of 49.375. The Huskers led Minnesota (48.85) and Illinois (47.975) heading into the second rotation.
The Huskers continued on to bars where Stone hit a 9.85, and Kassandra Nathe posted a season-high 9.825 and Evenstad added the same score. Scaffidi hit a 9.80 and Howard added a 9.65. The Huskers totaled a 48.95 on the event, increasing their total score (98.325) over Minnesota (95.90) and Illinois (96.55).
Nebraska moved on to the third rotation on beam, where Howard led the way with a 9.80. Kristin Fyffe and Scaffidi followed with a pair of 9.70’s. Stone posted a 9.40, while NU had to count a fall with Habbib’s 9.30. The Huskers finished the event with a 47.975 to give them a total of 146.30. Illinois tallied a 145.00 and Minnesota a 144.225 heading into the final rotation.
The Huskers capped the day on floor, where Scaffidi hit a career-high of 9.90. Evenstad added a 9.85, and Steinauer posted a 9.775. Davis closed her night by hitting a 9.75. Nebraska posted an event score of 48.90 to post a total of 195.20 on the night. Illinois ended with a 193.375 and Minnesota totaled a 192.775.
“Overall, it was a good win,” Kendig said. “We’re happy to get a win, but it was not a Husker performance. We know we’re better; we work too hard for this to happen. We’ll react from this and work to get better for next Sunday.”
Nebraska hosts to No. 13 Michigan this Sunday, Jan. 24. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Devaney Center.
