Huskers Fall to Cowgirls in Game Two

Lincoln - Oklahoma State scored a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to win game two of Sunday's Big 12 Conference doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium, 2-0.

The Cowgirls scored a pair of two-out runs to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of game one, only to see the Huskers rally for the 6-3 win. But Nebraska was unable to rally in game two, as the Huskers dropped their first home game of the season. Following the doubleheader split, NU's record stands at 25-7 with a 2-2 mark in conference action.

Three Husker hurlers saw time in the circle in game two, with freshman right-hander Ashley Hagemann (6-3) taking the loss in her Big 12 debut. Hagemann was charged with two runs on only one hit in 2.1 innings. Junior right-hander Alex Hupp earned her second start of the season and allowed three hits in 3.0 innings. Senior right-hander Molly Hill worked the final 1.2 innings, allowing the game-winning hit, although both runs were charged to Hagemann.

Sarah Odom (12-2) earned the win for Oklahoma State, becoming only the third pitcher to shut out the Huskers out this season. Odom tossed a five-hitter to help the Cowgirls improve to 26-8 on the season and 3-1 in the league.

The hits were even at five at the game, but Oklahoma State had the better scoring chances throughout the game. A leadoff double followed by a single spelled the end of the day for Hupp in the top of the fourth. Hagemann came on with runners on the corners and no outs and promptly walked the first batter she faced to load the bases. She fought back to coax a shallow fly out to right before striking out the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.

Oklahoma State threatened again in the top of the sixth and came through with a clutch hit. A hit batter, a fielder's choice and a double to the wall in left put Cowgirls on second and third with only one out. Hill came on in relief and struck out the first batter before Taylor Marcum laced a two-out, two-run double past sophomore Heidi Foland at third to put OSU up 2-0.

The Huskers brought the tying runner to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not muster a run. In the seventh, sophomore Julie Brechtel led off with a single before the next two batters both grounded out on 3-2 counts. Odom then recorded a strikeout to leave Brechtel stranded at third and preserve her third shutout of the season.

Brechtel was one of five Huskers to single on the day, while senior catcher Amanda Duran walked twice.

Nebraska wraps up its seven-game homestand on Wednesday, when the Huskers host in-state rival Creighton at 6 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium.
