NU Wins Masters Classic, Upsets No. 3 UCLA

Lincoln ? The 12th-ranked Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high score of 196.225 to capture its 16th MastersClassic team title in front of 1,439 fans Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers, who upset No.3 UCLA (196.125) also topped Minnesota (195.075) and NC State (194.55), posted a season-high vault score (49.40) and saw Kylie Stone take the all-around crown, with a career-high score of 39.475.

“We started off with our best vaulting of the year,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “We nailed 2 out of 5 routines, and getting a 49.40 to start the day is really nice. We kind of gave it away on bars, we gave up the opportunity to score big with that event, but we’ll keep working and get it. Beam kept us in the meet, and I could sense the team was down, but we got them going again.”

Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Tricia Woo led the way with a career-high 9.95 as she tied for second in the event, and Kylie Stonenailed a 9.925. Lora Evenstad added a 9.875 and Erin Davis posted a 9.85. Kristin Fyffe opened her day with a 9.775, and Kassandra Nathe hit a scoreof 9.80. NU finished with a season-high event score of 49.40. After one rotation, the Huskers stood in first place over UCLA (48.975), NC State (48.175) and Minnesota (48.725).

NU then moved on to bars with Evenstad and Kathryn Howard hitting a 9.725. Stone tied for third as she posted a 9.85. Brittney Williams scored a 9.775 and Nathe added a 9.625. Nebraska closed the second rotation with an event score of 48.70. The Huskers stood in second place with a score of 98.10, while UCLA posted a 98.55, ahead of Minnesota (97.65) and NC State (96.575).

The Huskers continued on to the third rotation on beam, where Woo led the way with a 9.85 to tie for first. Stone and Fyffe posted a 9.80 each, and Howard and Habbib both hit a 9.725. Nebraska finished with an event score of 48.90, giving them a total score of 147.00. UCLA capped the third rotation with 147.750, Minnesota notched a 146.125 and NC State added a 145.325.

Nebraska capped the afternoon on floor, as the Huskers’ comeback effort proved to be successful, as they were led by Stone’s 9.90 to give her the event crown. Evenstad posted a 9.875 for second and Habbib hit a 9.85. Nathe closed the day with a 9.825. NU finished with an event score of 49.225, giving them a total score 196.225, narrowly escaping UCLA’s 196.125. Minnesota ended the day with a 195.075 and NC State finished with a score of 194.55.

“Life doesn’t get any easier for us from here on out,” Kendig said. “We’re headed to Michigan, which is a perennial power, but I know these girls are not afraid to work and do what they need to do to get the job done.”

The Huskers hit the road next weekend, as they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a dual with Michigan at Crisler Arena. Competition is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
