Lincoln - The No. 12 Nebraska women's gymnastics team opened its home schedule with a 195.325-194.625 win over No. 17 Penn State at the Devaney Center on Friday night. The Huskers took the top scores on bars and beam and hit the 49-mark on floor.
"We really battled tonight," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "We were down going into the final rotation, and we stepped up on floor to come out with the win. It was a great night on floor for us. We've really been working on presentations on floor. I really think that was evident tonight."
The Huskers started the evening on vault, where Big 12 Gymnast-of-the-Week Kylie Stone started her night with a season-high tying 9.85 to take second in the event. Lora Evenstad and Tricia Woo tied for fifth with scores of  9.775. In the third rotation, Nebraska headed to beam where Big 12 Event Specialist-of-the-Week Woo led the way with a 9.85 to take the event crown. Howard put up 9.80 for second and Habbib added a 9.675. Fyffe notched a 9.60 and Nathe scored a 9.70 for fourth. Stone continued her night with a 9.675. Heading into the final rotation, Nebraska trailed Penn State 146.125-146.225.
The Huskers started the final event as Stone tied for first on floor and earned a 9.925 to tie her career-high mark. Davis and Nathe received scores of 9.775 to tie for fifth. Davis tied her season-high mark. Habbib added a 9.80 for fourth. Evenstad posted a strong 9.90 for third. Nebraska finished the event with a team score of 49.175, giving them the win over the Nittany Lions, 195.325-194.625.
"I'm really proud of our guys for keeping their heads up and not letting anything bother them," Kendig said. "Other teams would have gotten down after a few mistakes, but our girls just kept on going. Now it's time to get ready for Oklahoma, they are really going to be our biggest competition in the Big 12 this year."
Nebraska is home next week, as Big 12 foe Oklahoma travels to Lincoln to take on the Huskers at the Devaney Center. Competition is set to begin Sunday at 2 p.m.
