Nebraska Tops Iowa State

Ames, Iowa- The No. 16 Nebraska women's gymnastics team improved to 1-1 after posting a score of 195.55-194.775 to win over Big 12 rival Iowa State Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. In their first conference meet of the year, the Huskers took top honors on vault, beam and floor, and saw two all-arounders hit the 39-mark.

In addition, Kylie Stone took the all-around crown for the second straight week with a score of 39.350 and captured first in every event except bars. Kassandra Nathe took second in the all-around for the second week as well with an even 39.00.

"A point I brought up to the girls was that we were pretty loose all day and in warm-ups," Head Coach Dan Kendig said. "Nobody was getting down, nobody was getting upset. We started picking things up and were strong. We hit routines and I thought we did a much better job than we did last week. I am proud of them. What happened today is a product of how hard they've worked."

Nebraska opened the evening on bars, where Lora Evenstad opened her evening with a 9.65. Kathryn Howard followed Evenstad's performance with a 9.70, and Brittnee Habbib added a 9.725 along with Stone, who posted a score of 9.775. Brittney Williams and Nathe tied for third in the event with strong scores of 9.825 apiece, which brought NU to an event score of 48.85 ahead of ISU's first-rotation vault score of 48.35.

The Huskers moved to vault, where Stone led the way a 9.85 and a first-place finish.  Erin Davis, who won the vault crown last week at Denver, posted a 9.80 to take second. Tricia Woo kicked off her night with a 9.775 and a tie for third in the event. Nathe scored a 9.675, while Kristin Fyffe put up a 9.725. Evenstad added a 9.20 to give the Huskers an event score of 48.825 and a 97.675 lead over Iowa State's 97.275.

Nebraska continued on floor where Stone led the Husker lineup by contributing 9.875 to claim the event title. Davis and Nathe both put up scores of 9.70. Evenstad and Habbib also powered the Husker lineup by contributing scores of 9.825 to tie for second. Woo capped the rotation with a 9.80. NU wrapped up floor with a 48.975 and a running score of 146.65 to the Cyclone's 146.025.

The Huskers finished the evening on beam with Stone scoring a 9.85 to take the event crown, and Nathe and Woo each posting a 9.80 to tie for third. Howard and Habbib put up a marks of 9.675. Fyffe finished her evening with a 9.725. Nebraska finished with an event score of 48.85 and a final team total of 195.50 to seal the win over Iowa State, which totaled a 194.775 on the evening.

"I really like this team and their ability to come in and work," Kendig said. "I feel like we'll be able to break that 196 mark in the next few weeks, it will be an inching up process. Confidence is a great thing and now we just need to get back to work. It was definitely a team effort and everybody felt good about everything. It was a tribute to their hard work and what they've been doing all week long."

Nebraska returns to action next Friday, Jan. 23, for a conference dual at No. 10 Missouri. Competition is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
