The Nebraska softball team officially ended fall workouts last week with a three-game Red-White Championship series at Bowlin Stadium, the first of its kind under Head Coach Rhonda Revelle.
Revelle decided to hold a competitive intrasquad scrimmage because of the Huskers’ large roster, increased NCAA limitations on the number of fall games and the importance for the players to see as much game action as possible.
“It got very competitive,” Revelle said of the scrimmage. “It helped us improve about as much as the games with other teams.”
The Husker roster was divided into two teams for the scrimmage. The white team featured returning starters Whitney Barrett, Julie Brechtel, Crystal Carwile, Heidi Foland, Molly Hill and Meghan Mullin, along with fellow returnee Kelli Linke and newcomers Madison Drake, Nikki Haget and Kirby Wright.
The red team featured returning starters Amanda Duran, Alex Hupp, Haley Long and Darcy Rutherford, along with fellow returnees Crystal Gonzalez, Brittany Pascale and Tori Tyson and newcomers Jamie Gay and Ashley Hagemann, who was limited due to an injury.
The white team won the series, 2-0-1. Playing under a 90-minute time limit, the teams tied at 1-1 in the first game, before the white squad won game two, 5-3, and took game three, 4-1. Hill pitched all three games for the white, while Hupp (two starts) and Tyson (one start) split time for the red team.
Game one was a pitcher’s duel, as Hupp allowed only four hits while Hill allowed just three. Game two featured more offense, as the red squad produced six hits, while the white team pounded out seven hits, including a home run from Carwile. In game three, Hupp and Hill each threw a five-hitter.
Offensively, Mullin (4-for-8) and Foland (4-for-6) each produced four hits for the red, while Carwile led the way with a 5-for-9 effort with a triple and a home run. For the white squad, Rutherford (3-for-10) and Pascale (3-for-9) each finished with three hits.
With the fall season now complete, the Huskers turn their attention to offseason conditioning until practice resumes in January in preparation for the UNI Dome Classic on Feb. 7-8.
