Huskers Blank Bears, 8-0

Lincoln ? Crystal Carwile homered and several newcomers had an impressive home debut, as the Nebraska softball team won its home opener with an 8-0, six-inning victory over Northern Colorado in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium.

 

Carwile finished 3-for-4 and drove in a season high four runs, including a towering three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Carwile also tied her career high with three hits and three runs scored.

 

Among the newcomers playing their first home game at Nebraska, Amanda Duran and Julie Brechtel eached finished a perfect 3-for-3. Brechtel also tied a career high with two RBIs, while Duran tied her career best with three hits and two runs scored while adding an RBI.

 

The work of Duran, Carilwe and Brechtel ? the Huskers’ 4-5-6 hitters ? helped make a winner of junior right-hander Molly Hill. Hill improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory, while tossing Nebraska’s first shutout of the season. In six innings of work, Hill allowed just two hits and struck out eight.

 

Hillarie Van Otterloo (2-5) took the loss for Northern Colorado (6-17). In three innings of work, Van Otterloo surrendered seven runs on eight hits while walking four and hitting a pair of batters.

 

Nebraska got off to a quick start offensively against the Bears, as Duran laced an RBI single in her first career at bat at Bowlin Stadium to score fellow junior Meghan Mullin and put NU on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskers nearly added another run when Brechtel singled, but fellow freshman Ashley Guile was thrown out at home attempting to score from second.

 

After stranding a pair of runners in the second, Carwile ripped a 2-2 pitch well over the wall in right for a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. Leading 4-0, NU had a chance for more with the bases loaded and two outs but couldn’t add to the lead.

 

Nebraska added another three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to go in front 7-0. Once again the Huskers did all of their damage with no outs, as four consecutive hits, including an RBI single from Carwile and an RBI double off the bat of Brechtel, brought all three runners home.

 

NU wrapped up its second run-rule victory of the season in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Haley Long.

 

The Huskers are currently looking for a doubleheader sweep in game two against Northern Colorado.
