Hupp Tosses No-Hitter in 8-0 Win

Lincoln ? Alex Hupp was nearly perfect in the circle, tossing a six-inning no-hitter as the Nebraska softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Northern Colorado with a second 8-0 victory in the nightcap on Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

Hupp was perfect through 4.1 innings and faced just one batter over the minimum on the night. She was perfect until walking Katelyn Landorf in the top of the fifth. The only other Bear to reach base was Jessie Schopeflin, who reached on an error but was promptly caught stealing with two outs in the top of the sixth.

Hupp, who won her third consecutive start, evened her record at 3-3 on the season. In tossing the 34th no-hitter in Nebraska softball history, Hupp struck out a career-high 12 batters in only six innings.

With Hupp in control in the circle, the Husker offense made the most of its six hits, producing eight runs for the second straight game. NU was aided by seven walks and five hit-by-pitches in the game. With plenty of RBI opportunities, it was the bottom of the order who delivered for Nebraska. Hupp recorded her first multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, but it was freshman Heidi Foland who stole the show.

Foland finished 2-for-3 with a double and a career-high five RBIs. Entering the game, Foland had yet to record an extra base hit and had tallied just one RBI in her first 12 career games.

Kelli Henderson (1-6) took the loss for Northern Colorado, which fell to 6-18 on the season. In four innings of work, Henderson allowed just three hits, but six walks and three hit batters did her in, as she was tagged for five runs.

Nebraska got on the scoreboard first, plating one run in the bottom of the second. Junior Haley Long led off the inning with a triple over the right fielder’s head and scored when Hupp reached on an RBI bunt single. The Huskers then loaded the bases with two outs before a ground out prevented further damage.

NU loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the third, but Foland made sure Nebraska would not waste the opportunity, lacing a three-run double to the gap in left center.

The Huskers extended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth and threatened to end the game early. Back-to-back walks to junior Crystal Carwile and Long started the inning, before Carwile stole third and scored on a throwing error. Long then scored on an RBI single from Foland.

Needing two runs to wrap up a second run-rule victory, the Huskers loaded the bases with only one out before a foul out and a fly out ended the inning.

Nebraska did wrap up the victory in the sixth. The first two batters were hit by pitches before Hupp recorded an RBI single and Foland fittingly ended the game with a sacrifice fly.

NU and Northern Colorado square off in another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is set for Noon and both games can be heard for free on Huskers.com.
