DeBuhr Pitches Huskers Past Jayhawks

Lawrence, Kan. - Senior right-hander Ashley DeBuhr followed up Sunday's no-hitter with a two-hit shutout on Wednesday to lead the Nebraska softball team past Kansas, 3-0, on a windy and chilly afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

DeBuhr was strong from start to finish, allowing just three baserunners. She retired the firstĀ 10 Jayhawks she faced and had retired eight in a row before a bloop single over the first base bag with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. DeBuhr also finished the game with 12 strikeouts against only one walk.

With the win, Nebraska picked up its seventh straight victory and improved to 27-11 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference. DeBuhr (13-5) tossed her second straight shutout and the Huskers' third consecutive as a team. NU has now gone 22.2 innings without allowing a run.

Nebraska gave DeBuhr all of the run support she would need with two quick runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Meghan Mullin got things started with a one-out infield single and fellow sophomore Crystal Carwile was then hit by a pitch. A single from senior Jamie Waldecker loaded the bases with only one out before Mullin came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Brittany Pascale.

Carwile then scored to put NU up 2-0 after an errant throw by the KU catcher as Waldecker stole second.

The Huskers made it 3-0 in the top of theĀ second when sophomore Haley Long led off with a single, advanced to third on an error and a sacrifice and scored on an RBI ground out from freshman Whitney Barrett.

Nicole Washburn became the first Jayhawk baserunner when she recorded a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth. The double marked the first hit DeBuhr had surrendered in 11.0 innings.

In the top of the seventh, Long recorded her second hit of the game with a two-out single to snap a string of 17 in a row retired by KU starter Valerie George. Senior Carmen Kier followed with a double to put runners at second and third with two outs, but the Huskers were unable to add to their lead.

George (9-3) pitched well, allowing only one earned run on five hits in a complete-game effort for Kansas (26-13-1, 2-3).
