Huskers Blank Red Raiders, 6-0

Lincoln ? Sophomore right-hander Molly Hill tossed her third consecutive shutout and fellow sophomore Crystal Carwile added a pair of RBIs at the plate, as the Nebraska softball team picked up its first Big 12 Conference victory of the season with a 6-0 win over Texas Tech in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.

 

Hill (12-6) allowed a season-high eight hits, but recorded nine strikeouts while stretching her career-high scoreless inning streak to 19.1.

 

With Hill in control in the circle, Carwile led an 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included her two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Whitney Barrett and sophomore Meghan Mullin each went 2-for-4, as the top three hitters in the Husker order combined to go 8-for-12. Senior Carmen Kier also had a great game offensively, finishing 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk.

 

NU's 11 hits tied its season high, while the six runs were just one shy of the Husker high this season.

 

Ashly Jacobs (13-11) took the loss for Texas Tech (17-18, 0-4 Big 12). In a complete-game effort, Jacobs surrendered six runs (five earned) on 11 hits while walking three and striking out a pair.

 

After Nebraska got its first two runners on but failed to score in the first, Kier gave the Huskers an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Senior Devin Porter ripped a one-out triple and after sophomore Darcy Rutherford was hit by a pitch, Kier cleared the bases with a two-run double to right center.

 

The Huskers added to their lead with another run in the bottom of the third when Carwile reached on a one-out single and scored on an RBI single off the bat of fellow sophomore Brittany Pascale.

 

NU made it 5-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two hitters were retired, three consecutive singles from the top of the Husker order plated both runs. Barrett scored on an RBI single from Mullin and she then scored on Carwile’s second RBI single of the game.

 

Carwile produced her second RBI of the game by doubling home Kier in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.

 

Nebraska (25-11, 1-2 Big 12) will look for its third doubleheader sweep of the week in game two.
