South Bend, Ind. - Behind a stellar effort from starting pitchers Molly Hill and Alex Hupp, the Nebraska softball team wrapped up its fall season with a pair of victories on Sunday at the Worth Classic, hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
In the first game, Hill tossed a two-hit shutout in the Huskers' 3-0 win over perennial power Michigan. Not to be outdone, Hupp fired a one-hit shutout as Nebraska defeated Western Michigan, 1-0, in the second game.
Against Michigan, sophomore Brittany Pascale and senior Jamie Waldecker provided the key hits in the Huskers' three-run sixth inning. Sophomore Haley Long led off with a single and senior Devin Porter followed with a double. With the bases loaded, Pascale laced a two-run single to score Long and Porter. Sophomore pinch-runner Kimberly Fuller then scored on a double to left center off the bat of Waldecker.
The three-run inning was more than enough for Hill, who limited the Wolverines two just two hits, including an infield single.
In game two, Hupp allowed only a double while dominating the Western Michigan lineup. The offense would give Hupp the only run she would need in the third inning.
Long was again the catalyst for the inning, as she led off with a single. After Porter advanced her to second with a bunt, Pascale ripped an RBI single to score Long. It marked the second game-winning RBI of the day for Pascale and the second game-winning run scored by Long.
Sunday's performance wrapped up an outstanding weekend for Pascale. The Frankfort, Ill., native provided the Huskers' lone run against Notre Dame in the first game of the tournament with an RBI double. Then in the second game on Saturday, Pascale drilled a two-run double in the first inning against Illinois-Chicago.
On the weekend, Pascale finished with five RBIs in four games, accounting for five of the Huskers' seven runs.
The Worth Classic marked the conclusion to Nebraska's fall season. The Huskers will now focus on off-season training before opening spring practice in January. NU opens the 2007 season at the Paradise Invitational in Honlulu, Hawaii, Feb. 8-11.
