Reds End Fall Drills with 9-5 Win

Lincoln ? Center fielder Jesse Boyer capped an amazing Red/White World Series by going 2-for-4 with four runs scored, leading the Red squad to a 9-5 victory Friday afternoon at Hawks Field.

Boyer concluded the series with a .438 average (7-for-16) with nine runs scored. The junior from Littleton, Colo., native also drew nine walks and finished the series with a .640 on-base percentage.

"Jesse has been a man on a mission all fall, and has played himself into the mix for playing time in the spring," Associate Head Coach Rob Childress said.

With the win, the Reds clinched the best-of-five series by a score of 3-1, as Friday's game marked the final practice of the fall for the Huskers, who will not practice again until January.

Childress said he was encouraged by the progress made during the fall practice, even though NU missed several returning starters because of injuries.

"It was a very positive fall, but we have a lot to work on over the next four months," Childress said. "We have a chance to be a very good team when everyone gets healthy, and we put everyone together on one field, but it was a very good fall."

The Reds finished the day with 12 hits, including three from junior Colin Shockey and two each from Boyer, redshirt freshman Kevin Belcher and true freshman Al Smith. Belcher finished the series with a .389 average and five runs scored, while Shockey hit .316 and drew nine walks.

Sophomore Tim Schoeninger earned the win for the Reds, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings, before junior Jeremy Becker and Shockey slammed the door, allowing one run over the final four frames. Becker, who finished the series with a 1.80 ERA in three appearances spanning six innings, gave up one run in three innings before Shockey closed the door with a perfect ninth.

The Reds took control in the middle innings, breaking a 4-all tie with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take control.

The Whites outhit the Reds, 13-12, as Braden Keith went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs, while Darren Hoffart, Chad Steele, Beau Sullivan, Johnny Bowden and Tyler Vaughn each had two hits in loss.

"Every time we got on the board, they came right back, and that's what happened the entire series," Childress said. "We had our chances today, but we didn't get the key hit."

On the series, Steele paced the White squad with a team-high .562 average (9-for-16), while Keith also tied for the team lead with nine hits and hit .350.

Freshman Jon Klausing pitched well in defeat, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
