Hutchinson, Kan. -- The Nebraska men's golf team recorded a 12th-place finish Tuesday at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club. After a first-round score of 312, which coach Bill Spangler referred to as a "rough start", the squad knocked-off 17 strokes for a 295 to gain some optimism heading into Tuesday's concluding round. However, a final-round 302 was not enough to move the Huskers from the 12th-place position. Over the two-day competition, NU carded rounds of 312, 295 and 302 for a total score of 909 over 54 holes.
Texas used consistent rounds of 285, 282 and 283 for a total of 850 to win its first-ever Big 12 title. Oklahoma State carded the lowest score of the third round with a 277 to finish one stroke back of the Longhorns in second place.
Oklahoma State's Anders Hultman grabbed the individual title from Monday's leader, John Kidwell of Oklahoma, in a one-hole playoff win. Both recorded three-round scores of 203 in regulation play for the tournament.
For the Huskers, junior Jim Troy fired rounds of 76, 71 and 76 for a 54-hole total of 223 to finish tied for 29th. With a score of 228, junior Kevin Bryson tied for 42nd, while junior J.J. Sullivan notched a 53rd-place tie with a final score of 234. Senior Blake Humbles finished in a tie for 56th with a final score of 236. Firing NU's lowest round of the day, sophomore Chris Hartwig combined a final-round 73 with rounds of 78 and 86 for a total of 237 to finish 59th.
