Hutchinson, Kan. -- The Nebraska men's golf team concluded the first day of the Big 12 Championship in 12th place. The squad used rounds of 312 and 295 for a two-round total of 607 (+47). Despite his team's rough start, coach Bill Spangler is still optimistic.
"We were put in a difficult position with a poor first round, but we came back and played well. To their credit, the guys improved 17 strokes in the second round and proved that we can play with any team. We just got off to a bad start today," Spangler said of the squad's first day.
Oklahoma leads the tournament with a three-under-par score of 557. The Sooners' John Kidwell fired impressive rounds of 64 and 69 for a 133 to hold the first-place spot at the end of two rounds of play.
For the Huskers, junior Jim Troy carded rounds of 76 and 71 for a 147 and is currently in a 19th-place tie. In a tie for 40th, junior Kevin Bryson carded a 152 over two rounds. Senior Blake Humbles is presently tied for 43rd with a 153 over 36 holes, while junior J.J. Sullivan is tied for 52nd with a 157. Sophomore Chris Hartwig recorded a 164 to finish Monday in 60th.
