Huskers Fall to Iowa in Season Opener

Lincoln -- The No. 67 Nebraska women's tennis team was defeated by Iowa, 6-3, in women's tennis this afternoon at the Woods Tennis Center in the season opener for both teams.

The Huskers (0-1 overall) were led by sophomore Sandra Noetzel and senior Jennifer Thoste. Noetzel, who was an All-Big 12 selection in 1997, defeated Iowa's Emily Bampton in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), while Thoste defeated Shera Wiegler in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. They also picked up NU's only doubles victory, defeating Erin Wolverton and Wiegler, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.

"I thought that Sandra and Jennifer carried us," said Nebraska Head Coach Scott Jacobson. "They really fought hard and played well for us."

Although the Huskers captured only two singles matches, freshman Ndali Ijomah took Wolverton to three sets before falling 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at third singles.

"I thought that Ndali's match at No. 3 singles was very winnable," Jacobson said. "Ndali played hard and as the year goes on, she will gain experience and win matches like this one."

Other Hawkeye winners included Natalya Dawaf at No. 1 singles, Megan Kearney at No. 5 singles and Erica Johnson at No. 6 singles, all of whom won straight set victories.

The Huskers return to action next Friday, Feb. 6, when the Huskers host Creighton at the Woods Tennis Center beginning at 5 p.m.
