Kelly Ward was an assistant coach under Bob Fehrs from 1980-1984. In his four seasons with the Husker coaching staff, Ward guided Nebraska to a 62-18 dual record. Ward and the Huskers had an impressive streak at the NCAA Championships also. NU had three consecutive top-six finishes in the team race as 11 Huskers earned All-America accolades under Ward.
Ward was a three-time All-American for Iowa State, including NCAA runner-up finishes his sophomore and junior years, while he won a national crown his senior season. In the Big Eight, Ward was a two-time champion and was named the meet's Outstanding Wrestler his senior year. Overall, his collegiate record was 126-10-2 with nine of those 10 losses to other national champions, and five of those to the world champion.
Ward graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor's degree in science in 1980.
